Political stability, trust and support for public policies: a survey experiment examining source effects for COVID-19 interventions in Australia and Hong Kong

Summary: This article examines the relationship between political stability, trust, and source effects on support for public policies. The study finds that the type of information source and the trust individuals have in different sources impact their support for new policies, and this impact is moderated by the level of political stability. Australian respondents tend to have similar attitudes towards policies regardless of the source, while Hong Kong respondents are more favorable towards policies put forward by medical scientists than those put forward by the government. The findings suggest that source effects can be influenced by the political context, which has implications for comparative studies on public trust and political legitimacy in settings where scientific input is crucial for policy development.

Summary: In Mexico, Chile and Colombia, policy debates on taxing sugar-sweetened beverages are based on coalitions for and against the policy. Intergovernmental support is crucial for framing policy aims, benefits and implementation, but the strong influence of transnational corporations poses a major constraint to implementation. Successful NCD prevention policies require support from government, grassroots organizations, policy champions and civil society groups, while governance arrangements need to address power asymmetries among different actors.
