Comparison of Endoscopic Discectomy Versus Non-Endoscopic Discectomy for Symptomatic Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Wei-Shang Li et al.

Summary: This systematic review compared the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic discectomy (ED) with non-endoscopic discectomy (NED) for the treatment of symptomatic lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Results showed that percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) and full-endoscopic discectomy (FE) have the advantage of reducing intraoperative damages, while percutaneous endoscopic transforaminal discectomy (PETD) and percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) can achieve similar outcomes with PETD having a steeper learning curve. More independent high-quality randomized controlled trials are needed for cost-effectiveness analysis.

Collimation Reduces Radiation Exposure to the Surgeon in Endoscopic Spine Surgery: A Prospective Study

H. Yener Erken et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare radiation exposure to surgeons during transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar diskectomy (PELD) using standard fluoroscopy versus collimation. Results showed that collimation significantly reduced the radiation exposure to surgeons in both groups and overall, indicating the importance of considering collimation during PELD procedures to minimize radiation exposure.

A matched comparison of outcomes between percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy and open lumbar microdiscectomy for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation: a 2-year retrospective cohort study

Meshal Jarebi et al.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes and recovery time between open lumbar microdiscectomy (OLMD) and percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD). The results showed that both procedures provided similar satisfactory outcomes, but PELD demonstrated potential advantages in terms of quicker recovery and lower back pain reduction early on. Further large-scale, randomized studies with long-term follow-up are needed to confirm these findings.

Percutaneous Transforaminal Endoscopic Discectomy Versus Open Microdiscectomy for Lumbar Disc Herniation A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Pravesh S. Gadjradj et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis on the effectiveness of percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) compared with open microdiscectomy (OM) in treating lumbar disk herniation (LDH) found substantial heterogeneity in short-term leg pain effects, but no significant differences in leg pain or functional status between the two procedures in intermediate and long-term follow-up.

Puncture and localization for percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy with C-arm navigation: a randomized controlled cadaver trial

Hao Qin et al.

Summary: The study showed that puncture and localization for PELD assisted by C-arm navigation flattened the learning curve for junior surgeons compared to conventional methods and significantly improved the success rate of the first puncture. Additionally, PELD using C-arm navigation reduced surgery time and minimized radiation exposure risk for both patients and medical staff.

Stylianos Kapetanakis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) in competitive elite athletes with surgically treatable lumbar disc herniation (LDH). The results demonstrated that PTED is an effective and feasible technique for surgical management of LDH in athletes, providing significant improvement in postoperative pain and health-related quality of life.

Transforaminal Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy: Basic Concepts and Technical Keys to Clinical Success

Sang Gu Lee et al.

Summary: Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD) has emerged as an effective and minimally invasive alternative to open microdiscectomy for treating radiculopathy with lumbar disc herniation. Important considerations during the procedure include accessing close to the target point, selective removal of disc fragments, determining the endpoint at solid pulsation, and ensuring discrimination of anatomical layers. Clinical outcomes of TELD have been shown to be comparable to open surgery with earlier recovery and fewer complications, indicating its efficacy as a surgical technique for appropriately selected patients.
