A hydroelastic fluid-structure interaction solver based on the Riemann-SPH method

Zi-Fei Meng et al.

Summary: A hydroelastic fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver based on the Riemann-SPH method is proposed in this study. The Riemann-SPH method is used to model elastic structures by modifying the Cauchy stress. This solver eliminates the need for artificial viscous force and achieves good results. For the fluid, the conventional Riemann-SPH with a low-dissipation limiter is adopted to simulate incompressible free surface flows. The structure solver is coupled with the fluid solver by considering force balance. The accuracy and robustness of the FSI solver are verified through benchmarks and hydroelastic FSI tests.

A generalized hybrid smoothed particle hydrodynamics-peridynamics algorithm with a novel Lagrangian mapping for solution and failure analysis of fluid-structure interaction problems

Mohammad Naqib Rahimi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel hybrid algorithm coupling Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Peridynamics (PD) to model extreme fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems with and without multi-scale defects. The algorithm is validated through well-accepted benchmark test cases and applied to simulate various extreme FSI problems with close agreement to literature data. The study proposes a new perspective for coupling different particle methods to achieve high-fidelity and low-cost modeling of complex FSI problems involving multi-scale defects and failure propagations.

Summary: In this study, a novel Block-based Adaptive Particle Refinement (BAPR) method is developed, which is able to provide necessary local refinement flexibly for any targeted characteristic and track it adaptively. The activation status of the block array in BAPR defines the refinement regions, and a regularization method is used to ensure an isotropic distribution of the generated particles.

Coupled PD-SPH modeling for fluid-structure interaction problems with large deformation and fracturing

Xuehao Yao et al.

Summary: A simple and accurate coupled peridynamics and smoothed particle hydrodynamics strategy is proposed for simulating fluid-structure interaction problems with large deformation and fracturing. The approach utilizes virtual particles and repulsive forces to ensure full kernel support of fluid particles and prevent penetration in the fluid-structure interfacial region. Validation studies show that the proposed method is capable of accurately modeling complex fluid-induced solid breaking problems.

On removing the numerical instability induced by negative pressures in SPH simulations of typical fluid-structure interaction problems in ocean engineering

Hong-Guan Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper emphasizes the importance of removing Tensile Instability (TI) induced by negative pressures in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations, and proposes modifications for Tensile Instability Control (TIC) and Particle Shifting Technique (PST) to simulate Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) phenomena. Different combinations of PST and TIC have varying results, with both methods being preferable for SPH simulations characterized by extremely strong negative pressures. Special modifications are needed for problems with a convex-shaped structure penetrating a free-surface in order to obtain accurate SPH results.

A multi-resolution SPH method for fluid-structure interactions

Chi Zhang et al.

Summary: The multi resolution smoothed particle hydrodynamics method presented in this paper models fluid-structure interaction problems by utilizing different smoothing lengths and time steps for fluid and structure discretization. A position-based Verlet time integration scheme is introduced to ensure momentum conservation at the fluid-structure coupling. The introduction of time-averaged velocity and acceleration for solid particles enhances force matching in the fluid and solid equations, demonstrating efficiency, accuracy, and robustness in numerical examples, including bio-mechanical problems.

Summary: This paper develops a numerical model for violent hydrodynamics of free-surface flows interacting with flexible structures using the SPH method accelerated with a GPU. By addressing known deficiencies in SPH-based structural modeling and implementing a unified SPH framework, the proposed model shows good agreement with benchmark solutions and achieves significant speedups on GPUs compared to CPU versions. This indicates the proposed model is a viable and efficient approach for simulating violent free-surface fluid-structure interactions.
