Environment Friendly Pretreatment Approaches for the Bioconversion of Lignocellulosic Biomass into Biofuels and Value-Added Products

Surbhi Sharma et al.

Summary: An upsurge in global population and rapid urbanization has led to a heavy reliance on petroleum-derived fuels, which has resulted in environmental concerns due to greenhouse gas emissions. By utilizing lignocellulosic biomass as raw material, an integrated biorefinery can produce renewable biofuels and fine chemicals, benefiting the sustainable bio-economy and biorefinery industry. However, effective pretreatment technologies are necessary to separate and upgrade the essential components of lignocellulosic biomass for efficient bioprocess. This review highlights the concept of biorefinery, lignocellulosic biomass, and the potential of green pretreatment strategies for producing biofuels and biochemicals.
