Extraction of iron (III) ions by core-shell microgel for in situ formation of iron nanoparticles to reduce harmful pollutants from water

Muhammad Arif

Summary: This paper introduces a new system suitable for simultaneous removal of metal ions and organic dyes. Silica microgels surrounded by poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-acrylic acid) were created using the free radical precipitation polymerization method. The system was used to extract iron (III) ions from water and was characterized using various techniques. The resulting iron nanoparticles loaded in the microgels were found to efficiently catalyze the reduction of organic pollutants and toxic transition metal ions.

The formation and control of ozonation by-products during drinking water advanced treatment in a pilot-scale study

Yongjing Wang et al.

Summary: Ozone treatment can effectively reduce odor and haloacetic acids in water, but also leads to the generation of aldehydes. The addition of hydrogen peroxide inhibits bromate formation but increases aldehydes production, which requires finding a balance point for controlling both substances simultaneously. A H2O2/O-3 (g/g) ratio of 1.0 could be a feasible option to meet the standards for both bromate and aldehydes concentrations.

Characteristics of flat-sheet ceramic ultrafiltration membranes for lake water treatment: A pilot study

Wenjian Yang et al.

Summary: The pilot-scale test on a water treatment process using flat-sheet ceramic membranes in the treatment of surface water with high turbidity and high content of organic matters showed promising results in terms of purification efficiency and membrane fouling control. The study found that membrane fouling rate was largely dependent on permeate flux, and high-intensity short-time backwashing mode was more efficient in preventing fouling.
