Transesterification under high pressure as a sequential step from pressurized liquid extraction: Effect of operational parameters and characterization

Najla Postaue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sequential step of high pressure transesterification to obtain fatty acid esters. The extraction by pressurized liquid was performed and the resulting product was directly used in a reaction with different temperature and pressure conditions. High operating temperature (<300 degrees C) led to a reduction in fatty acid esters. At 10 MPa pressure, a high ester yield and low content of unreacted compounds were obtained. The proposed process showed potential applicability in preserving active compounds and providing high quality and stability.

Lignocellulosic Biomass Valorization for Bioethanol Production: a Circular Bioeconomy Approach

Arti Devi et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass from different sectors is used as a precursor for the production of bioethanol and biochemicals. The integration of various conversion techniques on a single platform under the biorefinery approach is gaining interest globally. The economic viability of a lignocellulosic biorefinery depends on the efficient utilization of its major components, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The heterogeneous structure and recalcitrant nature of lignocellulosic biomass present challenges in its conversion into bioethanol and other value-added products. Successful bioconversion processes rely on effective pre-treatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation methods. Future research should focus on fully utilizing lignocellulosic biomass with minimal waste.

Production and Testing of Butyl and Methyl Esters as New Generation Biodiesels from Fatty Wastes of the Leather Industry

Dariusz Kurczynski et al.

Summary: Climate change requires the search for new energy sources, and one potential source is waste of biological origin, which can be used to produce biofuels as an alternative to petroleum-based fuels. This study proposes a method of using waste fats from a plant dealing with animal skins to produce biodiesel, and evaluates the properties of the resulting biofuels. The study finds that the transesterification process yields high efficiency in producing biodiesel from waste fats and that biodiesel produced from butanol exhibits superior properties compared to that produced from methanol. The utilization of waste fats for biodiesel production is a way to both utilize waste and contribute to environmental protection, and can be particularly beneficial in regions with abundant animal fat waste.
