Micro-texturing of polymer surfaces using lasers: a review

Amarachi F. Obilor et al.

Summary: Micro- and nanoscale structures produced on surfaces of metals, polymers, ceramics, and glasses have many important applications in different fields. Laser ablation using ultrashort pulses has become the prominent technique for generating different surface structures. This paper reviews the current research and progress in laser ablation of polymers, discussing the interaction between laser and materials, polymer properties influenced by laser, laser texturing methods, and achievable surface functionalities. The objective is to present a thorough review on laser ablation and laser surface modification of industrially used polymers, with considerable attention given to direct laser interference patterning.

Turning industrial paints superhydrophobic via femtosecond laser surface hierarchical structuring

Miguel Martinez-Calderon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of superhydrophobic hierarchical micro- and nano-scale structures on painted surfaces using laser micro- and nanomachining. The complex chemical composition of paints plays a crucial role in determining the wettability and self-cleaning properties of the surfaces following laser ablation. This technique shows promise for industrial applications on exposed painted surfaces.

Biofilm in Endodontics: In Vitro Cultivation Possibilities, Sonic-, Ultrasonic- and Laser-Assisted Removal Techniques and Evaluation of the Cleaning Efficacy

Uros Josic et al.

Summary: Incomplete and inadequate removal of endodontic biofilm during root canal treatment often leads to clinical failure. This review provides an overview of endodontic biofilm cultivation methods and discusses the effectiveness of sonic-, ultrasonic-, and Er:Yag laser-assisted biofilm removal techniques. Laser assisted agitation, as well as ultrasonic and sonic activation of the irrigants, are more efficient in biofilm removal compared to conventional irrigation. The choice of irrigant also plays a role in reducing bacterial contamination inside the root canal. Standardization of methodology and introduction of root canals with complex morphology in research are needed for better comparison and recommendations for the most efficient method in biofilm removal.

Simulation of nanosecond laser cleaning the paint based on the thermal stress

Yao Lu et al.

Summary: Laser cleaning is a method that uses thermal stress mechanism with nanosecond laser pulses to remove paint. The theoretical model developed takes into account critical factors such as plasma formation, plasma shielding effect, and temperature dependent absorptivity. The optimized parameter based on the model is at a laser fluence of 1.56 J/cm2.

Nanosecond laser cleaning for enhanced zinc coating quality of HSLA steel

Lixin Zhu et al.

Summary: In comparison to traditional pickling process, the zinc coating on the surface of industrial HSLA steel plate treated with laser cleaning pretreatment is more uniform, bright, and defect-free. Additionally, the surface textures created by laser cleaning help improve the coating's resistance to pulverization.
