Sustainable microbial fuel cell functionalized with a bio-waste: A feasible route to formaldehyde bioremediation along with bioelectricity generation

Mustapha Omenesa Idris et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical systems, particularly microbial fuel cells (MFCs), are becoming popular for their environmentally friendly energy generation and bioremediation. To improve electron transport and biocompatibility, better anode materials are required. Waste palm kernel shell-derived graphene oxide (PKS-GO) and reduced graphene oxide (PKS-rGO) were used as anode electrodes in MFCs, with PKS-rGO generating more energy and higher current densities than PKS-GO. The PKS-rGO anode also showed enhanced capacitance and faster electron transport rate. In addition, PKS-rGO was more effective than PKS-GO in bioremediating formaldehyde in wastewater treatment. This study provides insights into the effectiveness of PKS-rGO as an anode material for MFCs.

Study of a Pilot Scale Microbial Electrosynthesis Reactor for Organic Waste Biorefinery

Jiang-Hao Tian et al.

Summary: Microbial electrochemical technologies allow for microbial electrosynthesis (MES) of organic compounds using microbial electrolysis cells handling waste organic materials. These cells can generate soluble organic molecules at a higher market price than biomethane, satisfying economic and environmental goals. However, the long-term viability of bioanode activity might be a concern.

Local fruit wastes driven benthic microbial fuel cell: a sustainable approach to toxic metal removal and bioelectricity generation

Asim Ali Yaqoob et al.

Summary: The present study focused on using rambutan, langsat, and mango wastes as organic substrates in a benthic microbial fuel cell (BMFC) to reduce cadmium and lead concentrations in synthetic water. Among the three wastes, mango waste showed the highest performance with 78% and 80% removal efficiencies for Cd2+ and Pb2+ respectively. Bacterial identification revealed that Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter, and Citrobacter were responsible for metal removal and energy generation.

Summary: This study aims to improve electron transfer and cobalt remediation efficiency through microbial fuel cells (MFCs) by modifying the electrode material. The fabricated anodes with biomass-derived graphene oxide (GO) and metal oxides (ZnO and TiO2) as modifiers showed significantly higher power density and current density than traditional GO anode. The biofilm analysis revealed the presence of exoelectrogens and metal-reducing species. The prepared anodes also demonstrated successful cobalt remediation with high biocompatibility.

Making waves: Improving removal performance of conventional wastewater treatment plants on endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs): their conjugates matter

Ze-hua Liu et al.

Summary: Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) are emerging contaminants that cannot be effectively removed by traditional wastewater treatment methods. Advanced chemical oxidation methods, such as ozonation, have been proven to be effective but costly in removing EDCs. This study highlights the importance of EDCs conjugates, showing that their concentrations vary with temperature and increasing cleavage rates can improve removal efficiency.
