An Alternative Splicing Variant of the Mixed-Lineage Leukemia 5 Protein Is a Cellular Adhesion Receptor for ScaA of Orientia tsutsugamushi

Yen Thi Hai Nguyen et al.

Summary: A study found that mixed-lineage leukemia 5 (MLL5) is a host receptor for O. tsutsugamushi, interacting with ScaA to facilitate bacterial adhesion to host cells. Competitive inhibition assays using the C-terminal fragment of ScaA or the SET domain of vMLL5 showed significant inhibition of bacterial adhesion to host cells. These findings indicate that vMLL5 is a novel cellular receptor for ScaA-mediated adhesion of O. tsutsugamushi, enhancing bacterial infection.

The Orientia tsutsugamushi ScaB Autotransporter Protein Is Required for Adhesion and Invasion of Mammalian Cells

Yen Thi Hai Nguyen et al.

Summary: Autotransporter proteins are important in Gram-negative bacteria, playing key roles in bacterial pathogenesis such as adhesion and invasion. Orientia tsutsugamushi, the causative agent of scrub typhus, encodes multiple autotransporter genes, with ScaB protein demonstrating adherence and invasion capabilities in host cells, potentially contributing significantly to bacterial pathogenesis.

The burden of scrub typhus in India: A systematic review

Emily Devasagayam et al.

Summary: Scrub typhus is a common acute febrile illness in India causing severe morbidity, with a high case-fatality rate. Multiple organ involvement is frequent, increasing the risk of death. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial to reduce complications and mortality in patients with scrub typhus.
