Summary: There has been an increase in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infection and associated deaths, especially in children, exceeding seasonally expected levels in England (772 notifications reported in weeks 37 to 48 in 2022). Diagnoses of iGAS infection from lower respiratory tract specimens in children under 15 years increased to 28% in November 2022. Medical practitioners have been alerted to the exceptional rise in incidence, including unusual numbers of children presenting with pulmonary empyema.

Increase in invasive group A streptococcal (Streptococcus pyogenes) infections (iGAS) in young children in the Netherlands, 2022

Summary: A significant increase in the number of invasive Streptococcus pyogenes infections among children aged 0-5 years was observed in the Netherlands in 2022 compared to pre-COVID-19 years. Out of 42 cases in this age group, seven had varicella zoster infections and nine were fatal. This increase is not linked to a specific emm type. Vigilance for clinical deterioration as a sign of iGAS is important in young children, especially those with varicella zoster infection.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) are the main contributors to childhood pneumonia and pneumococcal disease. This finding is important for prevention and treatment strategies.
