Main Clinical and Laboratory Features of Children with Bacterial Meningitis: Experience from a Tertiary Paediatric Centre in Central Vietnam

Chau Duc Nguyen-Huu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to summarize the symptoms and laboratory findings of bacterial meningitis at a Vietnam tertiary care hospital. The results showed that Streptococcus pneumonia was the most common pathogen and fever and vomiting were the most common symptoms.

Summary: Our study confirms the effectiveness of PCV10 against IPD in Fiji, and shows a decline in IPD and PBPM in different age groups, especially in children aged 1-23 months, after the introduction of PCV10.

Prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae in conjunctival flora and association with nasopharyngeal carriage among children in a Vietnamese community

Yasser Helmy Mohamed et al.

Summary: The prevalence and association of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the nasopharynx and conjunctiva among children in a community were investigated. Non-encapsulated S. pneumoniae were most commonly identified in the conjunctiva, with a high concordance of serotypes between the nasopharynx and conjunctiva. Low birthweight, day-care attendance, and recent eye symptoms were independently associated with S. pneumoniae detection in the conjunctiva.

Epidemiology of non-vaccine serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae before and after universal administration of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines

Qian-qian Du et al.

Summary: The universal administration of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines has been proven effective in preventing Streptococcus pneumoniae infection, but it only provides immunity against vaccine serotypes. The prevalence and pathogenicity of non-vaccine serotypes have raised concerns after universal vaccination. Future focus should be on emerging and spreading NVTs for serotype epidemiological survey and vaccine optimization.

Triplex Direct Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction for the Identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae Serotypes

Mahamoudou Ouattara et al.

Summary: The qPCR method proposed in this study can identify pneumococcal capsular serotypes in cerebrospinal fluid without DNA extraction, saving time and resources. This testing approach showed similar sensitivity and a high level of agreement with the standard qPCR method when compared side-by-side.

Hospital-based sentinel surveillance for bacterial meningitis in under-five children prior to the introduction of the PCV13 in India

Yuvaraj Jayaraman et al.

Summary: A hospital-based sentinel surveillance network for bacterial meningitis in India found Streptococcus pneumoniae as the most common pathogen, with high fatality rates for Haemophilus influenzae meningitis. PCV13 covered a significant portion of pneumococcal infections, with major serotypes being 14, 6B, and 19F. Unsurprisingly, non-susceptibility to penicillin and multidrug resistance were observed, highlighting the importance of timely PCV expansion to reduce antimicrobial resistance burden in India. Continued surveillance post-PCV expansion is crucial for understanding the trend.
