Effect of PVOH/PLA plus Wax Coatings on Physical and Functional Properties of Biodegradable Food Packaging Films

Annalisa Apicella et al.

Summary: The study investigated the double coating technique to produce multifunctional, high barrier and heat-sealable biodegradable films. The first poly(vinyl) alcohol layer provided high barrier, while the second layer of PLA + ethylene-bis-stereamide (EBS) wax provided sealability and moisture resistance. The double-coated films showed comparable performance to synthetic polymer films used in the packaging industry, making them suitable for sensitive food packaging with high O-2-barrier requirements.

A review on techniques utilized for design of controlled release food active packaging

Hadi Almasi et al.

Summary: Active packaging is a new innovative food packaging technology that maintains food quality and extends shelf life by releasing bioactive compounds, with the main challenge being slowing down the release rate of active compounds. Controlled-release active packaging technology provides control over the release of active compounds during storage, utilizing various methods such as chemical modification of polymers, multilayer film preparation, and the use of nano-structured materials. These strategies aim to prolong the activity of active compounds in food CRP systems.

Preparation, and physicochemical and biological evaluation of chitosan-Arthrospira platensis polysaccharide active films for food packaging

Aiguo Luo et al.

Summary: Active films were developed by incorporating Arthrospiraplatensis polysaccharide (APP) into chitosan films at different ratios (0.0%, 0.5%, and 1.0%, w/v) using solution casting. The addition of APP improved the structural, physicochemical, mechanical, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of the chitosan-APP films. The composite films showed enhanced water resistance, vapor barrier properties, and mechanical performance. Therefore, chitosan-APP composite films have potential as active packaging materials in the food industry.

Oxygen Barrier Performance of Poly(vinyl alcohol) Coating Films with Different Induced Crystallinity and Model Predictions

Alamin Idris et al.

Summary: The presence of crystalline regions in poly(vinyl alcohol) coating films affects the diffusion pathway of gas molecules, ultimately influencing the oxygen barrier property of the film. By studying the induced crystallinity in the polymer matrix, it was found that a higher degree of crystallinity led to a lower oxygen transmission rate, and modified Nielsen models were used to predict the barrier performance based on the distribution of crystallites.
