Maceration and ultrasound-assisted methods used for extraction of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity from Ferulago angulata

Seyedeh Akram Mousavi et al.

Summary: The present study aimed to extract phenolic compounds from Ferulago angulata (Chavir) through maceration and ultrasound-assisted extractions (UAE). Both extraction methods had significant effects on the amount of effective compounds extracted. Ferulago angulata (Chavir) had high levels of phenolic and antioxidant compounds, with ultrasound-assisted extraction showing better results compared to maceration. Ethanol was determined to be the best solvent for extracting phenolic and antioxidant compounds from Chavir.

Effect of low-pressure cold plasma on the properties of edible film based on alginate enriched with Dunaliella salina powder

Aida Gholamazad et al.

Summary: Edible films based on sodium alginate enriched with different percentages of Dunaliella salina powder were treated by cold plasma in the presence of oxygen and argon. The results showed that plasma treatment improved film tensile strength and Young's modulus but reduced flexibility. Surface morphologies and topography were affected by plasma etching, resulting in increased surface roughness and contact angle. Water vapor permeability decreased due to reduced film pores and increased surface hydrophilicity. The total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the treated films were increased by both O-2 and Ar plasma. Furthermore, plasma increased the intensity of redness and made the samples more vivid.

Preparation of Waterproof and Breathable Polyethylene (PE) Film Through One-Step Plasma Treatment

Yingying Huang et al.

Summary: In this research, a new type of waterproof and breathable intelligent film was prepared through plasma surface treatment, which can be applied in the healthcare field. The plasma treatment resulted in a decrease in crystallinity and a change in surface properties, leading to improved breathability and decreased water contact angle while maintaining waterproofness.

Optimization of ultrasonic-assisted extraction of phenolic compounds from pomegranate and orange peels and their antioxidant activity in a functional drink

Afshin Selahvarzi et al.

Summary: This study optimized the ultrasound extraction conditions of phenolic compounds from pomegranate and orange peels and used the extracts to enrich a functional drink. The results showed that the extraction time, temperature, and solid to solvent ratio had significant effects on the total phenol content and antioxidant activity. Adding the extracts to the drinks significantly enhanced the bioactive compounds content and antioxidant activity. However, during cold storage, the content of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity gradually decreased.

Migration of red grape extract components and glycerol from soybean protein concentrate active films into food simulants

Silvina P. Agustinelli et al.

Summary: The migration of glycerol and red grape extract components from soy protein concentrate films into aqueous and fatty food simulants was studied, showing different migration patterns for each component. RGE components preferred fatty simulant, while glycerol was released more into aqueous medium. The SPC-RGE film exhibited delayed oxidation in steam cooked mackerel chunks compared to control and SPC film, suggesting its potential as an active food packaging material.

Polyethylene Films Containing Plant Extracts in the Polymer Matrix as Antibacterial and Antiviral Materials

Magdalena Ordon et al.

Summary: LDPE films coated with a mixture of rosemary, raspberry, and pomegranate CO2 extracts have been found to have antibacterial and antiviral properties, inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and exhibiting activity against phi 6 bacteriophage. The incorporation of the extracts into the polymer matrix affected mechanical properties and provided UV radiation barrier properties, making them suitable for functional food packaging with extended shelf life.

Active polyethylene films incorporated with β-cyclodextrin/ferula asafoetida extract inclusion complexes: Sustained release of bioactive agents

Razieh Niazmand et al.

Summary: In this study, PE films with antimicrobial ferula asafoetida leaf and gum extract/beta-cyclodextrin (BCD) inclusion complexes were developed to achieve controlled release of active compounds. The films incorporated with gum extract/BCD inclusion complexes (Gum-BCD) showed better properties compared to films with leaf extract/BCD inclusion complexes (Leaf-BCD). Inclusion of bioactive compounds in BCD resulted in sustained release of compounds and prevented the release of certain compounds in simulant.
