Production and assessment of the biodegradation and ecotoxicity of xylan-and starch-based bioplastics

Summary: The CuO@ZIF-8 antibacterial agent was synthesized using an environmentally-friendly method and incorporated into composite double-layer films for packaging materials, demonstrating excellent antibacterial activity and elongation. These double-layer films exhibit low water vapor permeability and strong UV-barrier ability, effectively slowing down the growth of harmful microorganisms on fruit surfaces, and showing good cytocompatibility.

Chitosan/zein bilayer films with one-way water barrier characteristic: Physical, structural and thermal properties

Summary: Chitosan and zein were used to develop bilayer films with a one-way water barrier. The effects of mass ratios on the microstructure and properties of the films were investigated. The results showed that the C:Z = 1:3 film had better performance, especially in water vapor and oxygen permeability.

Summary: This study evaluated the tribological acceptability of reducing the acetabular liner thickness in metal-on-vitamin-E diffused highly crosslinked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (Vit-E XLPE) bearings for total hip arthroplasty. The results showed that reducing the thickness by 2-4 mm did not significantly affect the wear rate of the Vit-E XLPE liner, but reducing it by 6 mm significantly increased the wear and roughness.

Double-layer indicator films aided by BP-ANN-enabled freshness detection on packaged meat products

Summary: This study proposed the use of raspberry anthocyanins as a freshness indicator for packaged meat products. The stability of the indicator was improved by incorporating it into low-acyl gellan and forming an outer layer with chitosan. The double-layer indicator film showed strong mechanical properties, low water vapor permeability, and good structural compatibility. The neural network model accurately predicted the freshness of the meat products based on the color change of the films.

Multilayer gelatin/myofibrillar films containing clove essential oil: Properties, protein-phenolic interactions, and migration of active compounds

Shelf-life extension of salmon using active total biodegradable packaging with tea ground waste and furcellaran-CMC double-layered films

Summary: This study developed and characterized active biopolymer trays as part of biodegradable packaging. The trays showed high antioxidant potential and biodegradability. However, they may limit germination and seed growth, possibly due to the low pH of the material. Furthermore, the packaging demonstrated potential inhibitory effects on the growth of microorganisms responsible for salmon spoilage and the accumulation of biogenic amines.

Utilisation of soybean post-production waste in single- and double-layered films based on furcellaran to obtain packaging materials for food products prone to oxidation

Summary: Single-layered films based on furcellaran and protein hydrolysates from soybean bran were prepared, and a procedure for the preparation of double-layered films was developed. The addition of the second layer affected the functional properties of the films, increasing the thermal properties and antioxidant activity while decreasing the tensile strength and elongation at break parameters. The active films behaved similarly to synthetic films when used as packaging materials for storing butter.

Electrospun Polylactic Acid-Based Fibers Loaded with Multifunctional Antibacterial Biobased Polymers

Summary: This study reports the development of antibacterial and compostable electrospun polylactic acid (PLA) fibers by incorporating a multifunctional biobased polymer in the process. The resulting fibers demonstrate high antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the antibacterial polymer does not impede the disintegrability of the material.

Summary: Active double-layered furcellaran/gelatin hydrolysate films containing Ala-Tyr peptide were developed and characterized for the first time. These films were used on Atlantic mackerel stored at -18 degrees C for 4 months, showing no significant effects on fish oxidation but inhibiting TVB-N formation. The antimicrobial properties of the films should be further investigated for perishable food products stored above 0 degrees C.
