Some Natural Photosensitizers and Their Medicinal Properties for Use in Photodynamic Therapy

Tomasz Piotr Kubrak et al.

Summary: Despite advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising approach for eliminating various cancers, using a combination of photosensitizers, light irradiation, and molecular oxygen. However, PDT is not as widely used in therapy as conventional chemotherapy. In this review, natural compounds with photosensitizing properties are discussed as potential alternatives. The focus is on their anticancer activity and light-absorbing properties, aiming to identify compounds with reduced toxicity and side effects.

Effects of Curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy on autophagy and epithelial-mesenchymal transition of lung cancer cells

Lan Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Curcumin-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) on EMT in lung cancer cells and explored the role of autophagy in regulating EMT. The results showed that Curcumin-PDT inhibited EMT, migration, and invasion, and induced autophagy in lung cancer cells. However, autophagy had a promoting effect on EMT in lung cancer cells. Furthermore, combining Curcumin-PDT with an autophagy inhibitor further suppressed EMT in lung cancer cells.

Combination treatment of dendrosomal nanocurcumin and low-level laser therapy develops proliferation and migration of mouse embryonic fibroblasts and alter TGF-β, VEGF, TNF-α and IL-6 expressions involved in wound healing process

Afsaneh Ebrahiminaseri et al.

Summary: The combination treatment of DNC and LLLT was found to enhance proliferation and migration of MEFs, upregulate growth factors, and reduce inflammatory cytokines. Additionally, DNC was able to reduce the increase in intracellular ROS induced by LLLT in mouse embryonic fibroblasts, indicating a potential beneficial role of DNC as an accompaniment to LLLT in wound healing.
