Metal-Based Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Mechanisms and Biomedical Application

Domenico Franco et al.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to a search for alternative antibacterial agents. Nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative due to their intrinsic antibacterial activity. However, the mechanisms underlying their action are still not well understood, limiting their use in clinical applications. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, as well as the strategies employed by bacteria to develop resistance. Additionally, recent biomedical applications of these nanoparticles with antibacterial activity are discussed.
