Synthesis and characterization of polypyridine ruthenium(II) complexes and anticancer efficacy studies in vivo and in vitro

Lijuan Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, three Ru(II) complexes were synthesized and their anticancer activity was investigated in vitro. The complexes were found to induce apoptosis in cancer cells through regulation of mitochondrial function and apoptosis-related proteins. Among them, complex 2 showed excellent antitumor effects in vivo.

Combination of light and Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes: Recent advances in the development of new anticancer drugs

Luca Conti et al.

Summary: The increasing impact of cancer on mortality worldwide calls for the research and development of novel chemotherapeutic agents. Transition metal complexes, particularly Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes, have shown promise in photodynamic therapy and photochemotherapy, providing spatio-temporal control over drug activation. These complexes offer versatile options for both photosensitizer agents and photolabile complexes, addressing issues such as selectivity and oxygen-dependence. This review highlights the opportunities presented by RPCs in these treatment approaches, providing a comprehensive overview of their mechanisms of action.

Synthesis and Optimization of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for Ruthenium Polypyridyl Drug Delivery

Siti Norain Harun et al.

Summary: Ru-PIP is a potential anticancer drug that acts by inhibiting DNA replication, and its limited bioavailability can be overcome by using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as a drug delivery agent. Encapsulated Ru-PIP in MSNs exerted significant cytotoxicity on cancer cell lines, indicating the potential of MSNs as an ideal drug delivery agent for sustained release of Ru-PIP by diffusion.

Ruthenium Complexes in the Fight against Pathogenic Microorganisms. An Extensive Review

Alexandra-Cristina Munteanu et al.

Summary: The widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of drug-resistant microorganism populations, necessitating the development of new metal complexes as more effective antimicrobial agents. Ru (II/III) complexes show promise as anticancer drugs and are also being explored for use as antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitics, or antivirals. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of Ru (II/III) frameworks as antimicrobial agents.
