Three unrelated chemoreceptors provide Pectobacterium atrosepticum with a broad-spectrum amino acid sensing capability

A bacterial chemoreceptor that mediates chemotaxis to two different plant hormones

Summary: In this study, we found that a plant-associated pseudomonas putida strain, which metabolizes IAA, exhibits chemotaxis to IAA independently of auxin metabolism. We discovered that this IAA chemotaxis is mediated by the PcpI chemoreceptor and heterologous expression of pcpI confers IAA taxis to other environmental and human pathogenic isolates of the pseudomonas genus. Our findings suggest that PcpI recognizes and mediates chemoattractions to various aromatic compounds, including salicylic acid, and expands the range of signal molecules recognized by chemoreceptors.

Summary: Acetylcholine is shown to attract the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and this chemotaxis is mediated by the PctD chemoreceptor. The high-resolution structures of PctD-LBD with bound acetylcholine and choline, and PacA-LBD with bound betaine, reveal the molecular determinants for acetylcholine recognition.

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato infection of tomato plants is mediated by GABA and l-Pro chemoperception

Summary: This study demonstrates that the perception of GABA and l-Pro by the PsPto-PscC chemoreceptor drives the entry of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato into the tomato apoplast. The recognition of these compounds leads to chemoattraction and is involved in the regulation of GABA catabolism. Mutation of the PsPto-PscC chemoreceptor reduces chemotactic response, impairing entry and reducing virulence in tomato plants. Interestingly, GABA and l-Pro levels increase upon pathogen infection and are involved in the regulation of the plant defense response.

A catalogue of signal molecules that interact with sensor kinases, chemoreceptors and transcriptional regulators

Summary: Bacteria have developed various signal transduction systems to sense and respond to signals, with transcriptional regulators, sensor histidine kinases, and chemoreceptors being the most prevalent. These systems use ligand-binding domains (LBDs) to recognize signal molecules and modulate the activity of the output module. By manually retrieving information from publications and 3D structures, the authors classified 811 proteins, revealing the signal profiles and distinguishing between families with promiscuous signal recognition and those with well-defined ligand ranges. This signal repertoire will aid in identifying signaling molecules for uncharacterised sensor proteins.
