How Well Are We Measuring Snow Post-SPICE?

John Kochendorfer et al.

Summary: Accurate snowfall measurements are crucial for meteorology, hydrology, and climate research, but errors in solid precipitation measurements can significantly impact various applications. The recent WMO-SPICE aimed to reduce measurement uncertainties by involving 15 countries and utilizing over 20 types of precipitation gauges. Key results from WMO-SPICE are presented in this article, along with recent work and future research opportunities building on these results.

The processes of preferential flow in the unsaturated zone

John R. Nimmo

Summary: Preferential flow, including modes such as funneled flow, fingered flow, and macropore flow, is a major influence in unsaturated soil and rock. Review: Sources of Hydrological Model Uncertainties and Advances in Their Analysis

Edom Moges et al.

Summary: Hydrological models continue to be uncertain due to various factors such as input data, calibration, model structure, and parameters. Different methods for uncertainty analysis are categorized into six broad classes, but there is limited application for structural uncertainty. Further research is needed to improve computational efficiency, address various sources of uncertainty, enhance applications in environmental changes and human-natural-hydrological systems, and make it easier for practitioners to apply uncertainty analysis.

Uncertainty assessment of radar-raingauge merged rainfall estimates in river discharge simulations

Nergui Nanding et al.

Summary: The study highlights the advantages of radar-raingauge merged rainfall products for hydrological simulations, even when radar rainfall quality is poor and there are a limited number of raingauges. The GLUE uncertainty analysis demonstrates that rainfall estimate quality influences parameter uncertainty and discharge simulations.

Widespread potential loss of streamflow into underlying aquifers across the USA

Scott Jasechko et al.

Summary: The study finds that nearly two-thirds of wells in the contiguous USA are located below nearby stream surfaces, indicating a potential for streamwater seepage into the subsurface. Factors such as dry climates, flat landscapes, and extensive groundwater pumping contribute to the prevalence of losing streams. This highlights the need for coordination between groundwater and surface water policies to address the issue of potential streamwater losses into underlying aquifers.
