Multimodality approaches to control esophageal cancer: development of chemoradiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy

Yoshihiro Kakeji et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer treatment involves chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Chemoradiation and chemotherapy are beneficial treatment options, especially for patients who are not suitable for surgery. By combining these methods and integrating new immunotherapy, patient survival can be extended.

Global Burden, Risk Factors, and Trends of Esophageal Cancer: An Analysis of Cancer Registries from 48 Countries

Junjie Huang et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer globally, with preventive measures and clinical management differing based on histologic subtype. Adenocarcinoma has become the most frequent type of esophageal cancer in some Western countries, with obesity and metabolic syndrome identified as important risk factors. Population-based targeted screening endoscopy is recommended for high-risk individuals. This study analyzed incidence and mortality trends in esophageal cancer across 48 countries, revealing increases in adenocarcinoma incidence in certain countries and the need for more preventive measures.

Changing trends in the disease burden of esophageal cancer in China from 1990 to 2017 and its predicted level in 25 years

Songbo Li et al.

Summary: The incidence rate of esophageal cancer in China has decreased over the past few decades, but the number of cases and deaths are on the rise, predicted to increase by about 1.5 times in the next 25 years. Risk factors differ between genders, with females more affected by dietary issues and high BMI, while males are more impacted by smoking and alcohol consumption. National policies should focus on prevention and management of these known risk factors to curb the increasing burden of esophageal cancer in China.

Trends of Esophageal Cancer Incidence and Mortality and Its Influencing Factors in China

Bang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the incidence and mortality rates of esophageal cancer in China decreased from 2005 to 2015, especially in rural areas. The risk for males was significantly higher than females, while urban areas had a lower risk compared to rural areas.

PRICKLE1, a Wnt/PCP signaling component, is overexpressed and associated with inferior prognosis in acute myeloid leukemia

Duanfeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that PRICKLE1 expression levels were significantly higher in AML patients at diagnosis, decreased after complete remission, and increased again at relapse. High PRICKLE1 expression was associated with drug resistant AML cells and monocytic-AML patients, as well as with poor prognosis in FLT3/DNMT3A/IDH1/IDH2-mutant AML.

Expression Profile and Prognostic Value of Wnt Signaling Pathway Molecules in Colorectal Cancer

Yung-Fu Wu et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a heterogeneous disease with genetic and epigenetic changes, and molecular assessment along with biomarker use for prognosis is gaining attention. This study identifies high mRNA levels of 10 upregulated genes in CRC cells and datasets, showing correlation with worse prognosis in CRC patients. CTNNB1 is found to be a key factor in the interaction with upregulated CRC-associated genes, particularly regulating NKD2, FOXQ1, and CEMIP, which when inhibited, can suppress CRC cell growth, providing efficient biomarkers for prognosis and a new molecular interaction network for CRC.

Esophageal cancer: Epidemiology, risk factors and screening

Jiang Li et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a common cancer globally, with higher incidence rates in China, particularly in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The overall incidence rate of esophageal cancer is decreasing worldwide, influenced by factors such as regional economic development and dietary habits. Early diagnosis and screening can reduce the incidence and mortality of esophageal cancer.
