Nomograms Incorporating the CNLC Staging System Predict the Outcome of Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Curative Resection

Rui Liao et al.

Summary: This study developed two nomograms based on the China liver cancer staging system to predict the outcomes of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma after curative resection. The nomograms showed better prognostic abilities for postoperative survival and recurrence-free survival compared to the Tumor-Node-Metastasis 8th edition and Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging systems.

Liver resection for single large hepatocellular carcinoma: a prognostic factors study

Vincent Nguyen-Khac et al.

Summary: Liver resection is the only curative option for large hepatocellular carcinoma, but the survival rate is lower due to high recurrence. There is currently no proper tool for stratifying relapse risk. In this study, we investigated prognostic factors before liver resection in patients with a single large hepatocellular carcinoma.

Role of the pre- to postoperative alpha-fetoprotein ratio in the prognostic evaluation of liver cancer after radiofrequency ablation

Biwei Luo et al.

Summary: By measuring the levels of AFP before and after RFA and calculating their ratio, this study found that the AFP ratio can predict the prognosis of patients with liver cancer after RFA. An AFP ratio <37.9 is considered an independent risk factor for tumor recurrence and survival after RFA.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Serum Biomarkers for the Prediction of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Jose D. Debes et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer death worldwide. Late diagnosis and limited treatment options contribute to the low survival rate of patients with HCC. Currently, combining ultrasound with the biomarker AFP is a commonly used screening method, but its clinical utility and operator-dependence are controversial.

Summary: The NCCN Guidelines for Hepatobiliary Cancers provide recommendations for screening, diagnosis, staging, treatment, and management of HCC, gallbladder cancer, and cancer of the bile ducts. A multidisciplinary evaluation is crucial for determining optimal treatment strategies, with significant advancements in systemic treatment of HCC beyond traditional options like sorafenib.
