Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

Clinicopathological characteristics, survival outcomes, and genetic alterations of younger patients with gastric cancer: Results from the China National Cancer Center and cBioPortal datasets

Penghui Niu et al.

Summary: This study explores the clinicopathological characteristics, survival outcomes, and genetic alterations of younger and older patients with gastric cancer (GC). Younger GC patients had more poorly differentiated lesions and lower survival rates in stage III compared to older patients. Distinct molecular characteristics were identified in younger GC patients, which may explain the histopathology and prognosis specific to this subpopulation.

Cancer statistics in Chinese older people, 2022: current burden, time trends, and comparisons with the US, Japan, and the Republic of Korea

Wen Ju et al.

Summary: Due to population ageing, the burden of cancer among older people in China is increasing. The incidence and mortality rates of cancer are gradually rising among older women, while declining for both sexes. Lung cancer and digestive cancers are the leading types of cancer among Chinese older people. Compared with other countries, China has lower cancer incidence rates but higher mortality rates for older people. The findings suggest that addressing the growing demands for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care services from older people will be an important health priority in the coming decades.

Global and national trends in the age-specific sex ratio of esophageal cancer and gastric cancer by subtype

Shaoming Wang et al.

Summary: A male predominance was observed in esophageal and gastric cancers across the world from 2003 to 2012, with variations in male-to-female incidence rate ratios by age. Further investigation is needed to understand the underlying etiologies of these cancers by histological subtype and subsite.

An initial screening strategy based on epidemiologic information in esophageal cancer screening: a prospective evaluation in a community-based cancer screening cohort in rural China

Wanqing Chen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk stratification potential of the current initial assessment strategy used in a mass esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) screening program in China. The results showed that the high-risk population assessed at baseline had a higher risk of developing ESCC, and the initial assessment results were significantly associated with the risk of all esophageal cancers and upper gastrointestinal cancers.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Hospital volume following major surgery for gastric cancer determines in-hospital mortality rate and failure to rescue: a nation-wide study based on German billing data (2009-2017)

J. Diers et al.

Summary: This study in Germany showed that gastric cancer patients who underwent surgery in hospitals with higher caseload had lower postoperative mortality rates and reduced failure to rescue rates for severe complications. High-volume hospitals demonstrated better outcomes for gastric cancer surgeries.

Summary: This study identified significant differences in trends in esophageal adenocarcinoma and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma mortality and stage at diagnosis by race and ethnicity. The proportions of late stage disease increased overall, indicating a need for further efforts to address esophageal cancer disparities.

A global assessment of recent trends in gastrointestinal cancer and lifestyle-associated risk factors

Lili Lu et al.

Summary: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers exhibit regional differences in incidence, mortality, and prevalence worldwide, with higher mortality rates in developing countries possibly due to inadequate prevention and treatment strategies. The prevalence of GI cancers is positively correlated with national human development indices and lifestyle-associated risk factors, but negatively correlated with hypertension and diabetes.

Utility of a modified age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index in predicting cause-specific survival among patients with gastric cancer

Yusuke Koseki et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the modified age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (mACCI) is a better indicator of cause-specific survival (CSS) in patients with gastric cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy compared to the traditional ACCI. mACCI was identified as an independent prognostic factor for CSS.
