Superior energy storage performance of all-inorganic flexible antiferroelectric-insulator multilayer thin films

Tiandong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, all-inorganic flexible capacitor films were developed by growing antiferroelectric Pb0.94(Li0.5Al0.5)0.06ZrO3 (PLAZO) and insulating Al2O3 (AO) layer by layer on flexible mica substrates. The introduction of insulating AO layers reconciles the polarization and breakdown strength, resulting in a remarkable improvement in energy storage density and efficiency. Moreover, the APAPA flexible thin film capacitors exhibit excellent frequency stability and bending cyclic endurance.

Summary: Nb and Mg co-doping stabilizes the ferroelectric phase, significantly reduces the AP-P phase transition field from 461 to 173 kV/cm, and increases the low-field dielectric permittivity. At an optimal 2.5% Nb, 1.25% Mg doping concentration, the PbZrO3 films show the highest dielectric tunability of 88.8%, while maintaining a very high strain of 0.74%, and low AP-P phase transition field of 232 kV/cm.

Summary: The study examined the correlation between crystal structures, field-induced phase transition, and energy storage properties of PZO films grown on different substrates. It was found that polycrystalline PZO films exhibit higher maximum polarization and energy storage density, while epitaxial PZO films show higher recoverable energy storage density. The use of SrRuO3 oxide-electrode improves the endurance performance of energy storage properties and facilitates the integration of PZO films for high-power commercial energy storage systems on Si substrates.
