Persistent myelin abnormalities in a third trimester-equivalent mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder

Jessie Newville et al.

Summary: The study showed that alcohol-exposed mice exhibited lower FA and higher RD in the CC region. Furthermore, in the posterior CC of alcohol-exposed animals, a significantly higher G-ratio of myelinated axons was observed, indicating reduced myelin thickness.

Reduced and delayed myelination and volume of corpus callosum in an animal model of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders partially benefit from voluntary exercise

Katrina A. Milbocker et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of adolescent exercise intervention on corpus callosum myelination in a rat model of FASD. The research found that prenatal alcohol exposure delays the development of corpus callosum myelination, with a more significant effect on male brains. Additionally, exercise intervention improves corpus callosum growth, regardless of alcohol exposure.

Representation of prefrontal axonal efferents in the thalamic nucleus reuniens in a rodent model of fetal alcohol exposure during third trimester

Ian F. Smith et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of early life alcohol exposure on brain connectivity in rats. The findings showed that alcohol exposure can impair axonal connections of prefrontal cortex neurons, resulting in impaired executive functioning. Additionally, alcohol exposure led to a reduction in the volume of the thalamic nucleus. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the effects of early alcohol exposure on brain function.

Ethanol-mediated alterations in oligodendrocyte differentiation in the developing brain

Summary: Prenatal exposure to ethanol is associated with excessive apoptosis and/or delayed maturation of oligodendrocytes in the human fetal brain, along with dysregulated expression of chemokines and cytokines.

Glia-Driven Brain Circuit Refinement Is Altered by Early-Life Adversity: Behavioral Outcomes

Katrina A. Milbocker et al.

Summary: Early-life adversity (ELA) negatively affects neurodevelopment in children and adolescents, potentially leading to behavioral deficits and increasing the risk of developing a myriad of neuropsychiatric disorders. A comprehensive review of the mechanisms affecting adolescent neurodevelopment, specifically synaptic pruning and myelination, is lacking.

White matter alterations in young children with prenatal alcohol exposure

Preeti Kar et al.

Summary: The study found that young children with PAE exhibit higher FA and lower MD in brain structures, consistent with studies in newborns but contrasting with those in older age groups with PAE. Further research is needed to understand the trajectory of white matter development and how the observed differences in young children relate to those observed in older age groups.

Ethanol modulation of hippocampal neuroinflammation, myelination, and neurodevelopment in a postnatal mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders

Victoria M. Niedzwiedz-Massey et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of ethanol on the expression of key molecules in the development of the hippocampus in FASD, revealing novel mechanisms by which ethanol induces neuroinflammation and alters oligodendrogenesis. The findings suggest that ethanol may modulate pathogenesis in the developing hippocampus through effects on oligodendrocyte lineage cells, potentially contributing to cognitive impairment associated with FASD. Further understanding of the molecules involved may lead to new treatment strategies for FASD.

Examination of cortically projecting cholinergic neurons following exercise and environmental intervention in a rodent model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders

Katrina A. Milbocker et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the effects of two interventions on cholinergic neuronal morphology in a rodent model of FASD. We found that postnatal alcohol exposure reduces cholinergic neuron number in the nucleus basalis of Meynert, and this reduction is not mitigated by the interventions.
