Impact of specific high-risk human papillomavirus genotypes on survival in oropharyngeal cancer

Martin Garset-Zamani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of HPV genotypes on survival in HPV+ OPSCC patients. Results showed no significant difference in survival between HPV16 and non-HPV16 genotypes, but patients with other genotypes had worse survival outcomes. Genotyping in OPSCC may be interesting from an epidemiological perspective and in vaccination programs, but is not necessary for prognostication of HPV+ OPSCC.

Rising incidence of HPV positive oropharyngeal cancer in Taiwan between 1999 and 2014 where betel nut chewing is common

Cheng-Ping Wang et al.

Summary: The incidence of HPV positive OPC in Taiwan is stable at around 29%, with a rising trend in the crude incidence rate. P16 staining is a reliable marker for HPV infection and a good prognostic indicator for treatment outcome. Patients with HPV positive OPC have a significantly better overall survival compared to those with HPV negative OPC.

Summary: The NCCN Guidelines for Head and Neck Cancers provide clinical treatment guidance for tumors in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and paranasal sinuses, as well as occult primary cancer, salivary gland cancer, and mucosal melanoma. The treatment recommendations are based on the specific site of disease, stage, and pathological findings, and are continuously updated with new research data.

Population-Based Analysis of Trends in Incidence and Survival of Human Papilloma Virus-Related Oropharyngeal Cancer in a Low-Burden Region of Southern Europe

Jordi Rubio-Casadevall et al.

Summary: Human papilloma virus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) is a new subtype of cancer with different clinical characteristics and prognosis compared to tobacco-related cancers. The incidence of OPC is increasing globally, with higher rates of p16-positive cases. In our region, the burden of p16-positive oropharyngeal cancer is relatively low but on the rise, and it has a better prognosis.

HPV Prevalence and Predictive Biomarkers for Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Mexican Patients

Diego Octavio Reyes-Hernandez et al.

Summary: In Mexican patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC), HPV and p16 positivity are associated with better outcomes and reduced death risk, potentially serving as predictive biomarkers.

2011-2021 rising prevalence of HPV infection among oropharyngeal carcinoma in France

Philippe Gorphe et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in patient age and HPV prevalence in the population of patients with oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) treated at a cancer center over the past decade. The findings showed that HPV-positive OPC cases have surpassed HPV-negative cases in France, and there has been a significant increase in the average age of patients.

The immune microenvironment of HPV-positive and HPV-negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma: a multiparametric quantitative and spatial analysis unveils a rationale to target treatment-naive tumors with immune checkpoint inhibitors

Anna Tosi et al.

Summary: The study found that HPV-positive OPSCC patients have a more active immune microenvironment, with higher T cell infiltration and checkpoint molecule density, which may allow immune checkpoint inhibitors to be effective in treatment. Additionally, DFS is closely related to activating immune signatures, T cell density, and the spatial location of checkpoint cells.

Low Prevalence of HPV Related Oropharyngeal Carcinogenesis in Northern Sardinia

Francesco Bussu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence of HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in Sardinia and found that the rate is similar to less developed areas. However, using p16 immunohistochemistry alone for diagnosis has a low specificity and a high false positive rate.

HPV sensitizes OPSCC cells to cisplatin-induced apoptosis by inhibiting autophagy through E7-mediated degradation of AMBRA1

Manuela Antonioli et al.

Summary: Research has shown that HPV-positive OPSCC cells have reduced autophagy activity and lower expression of AMBRA1, possibly due to the interaction between HPV-E7 and AMBRA1 leading to calpain-dependent degradation. Inhibiting autophagy can increase the sensitivity of HPV-negative OPSCC cells to chemotherapy, suggesting that targeting autophagy could improve treatment response in HPV-negative OPSCC.
