The ambiguous role of obesity in oncology by promoting cancer but boosting antitumor immunotherapy

Jose Antonio Fagundes Assumpcao et al.

Summary: Obesity is a complex disease associated with metabolic and cardiovascular conditions as well as cancer development. Recent evidence shows that mild obesity is paradoxically associated with better treatment outcomes in cancer patients, termed as the obesity paradox. Obesity also impacts the response to cancer treatments and has a positive association with immune checkpoint therapy.

Neutrophils in cancer: heterogeneous and multifaceted

Catherine C. Hedrick et al.

Summary: Neutrophils have emerged as important regulators of cancer, revealing their diverse and plastic contributions in tumor development and growth, influencing positively and negatively depending on time, place, and disease context. Their functional importance in cancer has been overlooked due to their short-lived, terminally differentiated, and non-proliferative characteristics, but recent studies have led to a paradigm shift in understanding their roles.

The Many Uses of p53 Immunohistochemistry in Gynecological Pathology: Proceedings of the ISGyP Companion Society Session at the 2020 USCAP Annual9 Meeting

Martin Koebel et al.

Summary: p53 IHC is a reliable diagnostic adjunct for histotyping and molecular subtyping of ovarian and endometrial carcinomas, particularly important in identifying high-risk neoplasms. Familiarity with interpretation of p53 IHC is crucial for practicing gynecological pathologists, but further refinement of interpretation criteria is needed for different tumor sites.

Assessment of Ki67 in Breast Cancer: Updated Recommendations From the International Ki67 in Breast Cancer Working Group

Torsten O. Nielsen et al.

Summary: Ki67 immunohistochemistry (IHC) is commonly used in breast cancer as a proliferation marker, but its analytical validity has been questioned. The International Ki67 in Breast Cancer Working Group (IKWG) recommends careful preanalytical handling, adoption of a standardized visual scoring method, and participation in quality assurance and quality control programs. Clinical utility of Ki67 IHC in breast cancer care is currently limited to prognosis assessment in stage I or II breast cancer.

Impact of body mass index on pathological complete response following neoadjuvant chemotherapy in operable breast cancer: a meta-analysis

Haiyun Wang et al.

Summary: Normal weight breast cancer patients are more likely to achieve pathological complete response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy compared to overweight or obese patients. Both overweight and obese groups have lower chances of achieving pCR with NACT.

The Peripheral Immune Landscape of Breast Cancer: Clinical Findings and In Vitro Models for Biomarker Discovery

Sofia Batalha et al.

Summary: Breast cancer is the deadliest female malignancy worldwide, and defining and analyzing circulating immune profiles of patients is crucial for faster, cheaper, and more precise monitoring of their status. This review compiles knowledge on the peripheral immune profile of breast cancer patients and proposes using this data as a starting point for validating clinically relevant biomarkers of disease progression and therapy response. Further scientific advancement in peripheral biomarker discovery and cancer-immune crosstalk in breast cancer will be instrumental in uncovering molecular mechanisms and potential biomarkers and drug targets.
