Circulating Tumor DNA is Unreliable to Detect Somatic Gene Alterations in Gastrointestinal Peritoneal Carcinomatosis

Brittany G. Sullivan et al.

Summary: This study found that peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) is associated with lower levels of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) compared to other metastatic sites in gastrointestinal cancers. The researchers also caution that interpretation of ctDNA results in patients with PC should be done with caution due to lower sensitivity for detecting actionable mutations.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Tumor Cells-derived exosomal CircRNAs: Novel cancer drivers, molecular mechanisms, and clinical opportunities

Ali Vahabi et al.

Summary: Recently, circRNAs have gained increasing interest due to their abundant expression and potential functions in cancer development. They may act as sponge for miRNAs and proteins, promoting cancer progression. CircRNAs frequently show tumor-specific expression and can serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for cancers. They can also be potential targets for cancer treatment as they can sponge oncogenic miRNAs and proteins. Exosomes, containing circRNAs, deliver them to target cells and induce cancer development through different signaling pathways. Exosomal circRNAs may serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for cancers. Targeting exosomes may represent novel therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment.

Role of exosomal non-coding RNAs from tumor cells and tumor-associated macrophages in the tumor microenvironment

Zijie Xu et al.

Summary: Exosomes play a crucial role in intercellular communication, especially in interactions between tumor cells and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). Exosome-encapsulated non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are involved in various physiological processes, regulating tumor proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, chemoresistance, and immunosuppression. The effects of exosomal ncRNAs on immune cells contribute to T cell exhaustion and the creation of a tumor immunosuppressive microenvironment.

MiR-150-5p Overexpression in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Contributes to the In Vitro Aggressiveness of This Breast Cancer Subtype

Bruna M. Sugita et al.

Summary: MiR-150-5p is highly expressed in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) and its expression levels are associated with tumor grade, patient survival, and ethnicity. Overexpression of miR-150-5p contributes to the aggressive phenotypes of TNBC cells.

Exosome-based liquid biopsies in cancer: opportunities and challenges

W. Yu et al.

Summary: Liquid biopsy in cancer research has seen significant progress, with efforts focused on utilizing circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, and extracellular vesicles like exosomes. Exosomes, as part of the intercellular communication system, carry tumor-derived materials and can serve as stable biomarkers for early detection and monitoring of cancer.

Exosome-derived noncoding RNAs in gastric cancer: functions and clinical applications

Xiao-Huan Tang et al.

Summary: Exosomes, a subpopulation of the tumour microenvironment (TME), are crucial for intercellular communication and are enriched with noncoding RNAs that play important roles in the tumorigenesis, progression, and drug resistance of gastric cancer (GC). Regulating exosomal ncRNAs levels could potentially serve as therapeutic targets for GC treatment.

The Interaction between Reactive Peritoneal Mesothelial Cells and Tumor Cells via Extracellular Vesicles Facilitates Colorectal Cancer Dissemination

Simona Serrati et al.

Summary: Evolving evidence suggests that cancer-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a crucial role in facilitating directional metastasis in colorectal cancer to the peritoneal surface. These EVs can induce cell apoptosis, reduce invasiveness, and promote tumor invasion. Additionally, mesothelial cells release EVs that contribute to tumor invasion and trigger pro-invasive systems in tumor cells.
