Association of Abdominal Visceral Adiposity and Total Fat Mass with Cancer Incidence and Mortality in White and Black Adults

Peter T. Katzmarzyk et al.

Summary: This study found that both abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and total fat mass (FM) are associated with cancer incidence and mortality. The association between VAT and cancer incidence is largely independent of total FM. These results suggest that more direct measures of adiposity may be needed in assessing obesity-related cancer risk.

Associations of fat and muscle mass with overall survival in men with prostate cancer: a systematic review with meta-analysis

Summary: In men with prostate cancer, overall adiposity does not significantly impact survival, while higher subcutaneous adipose tissue levels are associated with higher survival rates. Low muscle mass is linked to increased mortality risk in patients with localized or advanced disease.

Adiposity and cancer survival: a systematic review and meta-analysis

En Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that imaging-measured visceral, subcutaneous, and total adiposity were not significantly associated with increased risk of overall mortality, death from primary cancer, or cancer progression among patients diagnosed with 10 cancer types. However, significant or high heterogeneity was observed across many cancer types, indicating potential differences in study design and adiposity measurement approaches.

Quantification of adipose tissues by Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry and Computed Tomography in colorectal cancer patients

Summary: This study compared the accuracy of DXA and CT measurements of visceral adipose tissue and fat mass in CRC patients, finding that DXA overestimated adipose tissue and suggesting that a combination of three CT slices for measurement is more accurate. Additionally, there was a more significant overestimation of adipose tissue in obese individuals compared to those of normal weight.

Association between CT-Quantified Body Composition and Recurrence, Survival in Nonmetastasis Colorectal Cancer Patients Underwent Regular Chemotherapy after Surgery

Piaopaio Ying et al.

Summary: CT-quantified body compositions have a significant impact on the prognosis of CRC patients who have undergone curative resection and regular standard chemotherapy. Patients with high skeletal muscle mass (SM) have a poorer prognosis in overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in the T4 subgroup, while the prognostic role of body composition is opposite in T2-3 patients.
