The impact of robotics in liver surgery: A worldwide systematic review and short-term outcomes meta-analysis on 2,728 cases

Ruben Ciria et al.

Summary: The study compared the advantages of robotic liver surgery with traditional open and laparoscopic approaches, finding that robotic surgery may offer better short-term outcomes, especially in cases of malignancies. Robotic surgery shows clear advantages over open surgery, but compared to laparoscopic surgery, the costs remain higher.

Laparoscopic Minor Liver Resections for Hepatocellular Carcinoma in the Posterosuperior Segments Using the Rubber Band Technique

Theo Genesis Tagaytay et al.

Summary: This study compared the surgical outcomes of laparoscopic and open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma located in the posterosuperior segments. The results showed that laparoscopic liver resection had shorter operative time, lesser blood loss, lower complication rate, and shorter hospital stay compared to open liver resection. Intraoperative transfusion, resection margin, 5-year disease-free survival, and 5-year overall survival were similar between the two groups.

Safety and feasibility of laparoscopic liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma with clinically significant portal hypertension: a propensity score-matched study

Junhao Zheng et al.

Summary: The study shows that laparoscopic liver resection is safe and feasible for HCC patients with clinically significant portal hypertension, expanding the indications for hepatectomy. Patients with portal hypertension may have a longer postoperative hospital stay, but there were no significant differences in operation time, blood loss volume, transfusion rates, etc. between the portal hypertension and non-portal hypertension groups.

Laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy is a more favorable treatment than open repeat hepatectomy for contralateral recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma cases

Hidetoshi Gon et al.

Summary: Comparing surgical outcomes, it was found that laparoscopic repeat hepatectomy (LRH) was more favorable than open repeat hepatectomy (ORH) in treating patients with contralateral recurrent HCC, showing shorter operation time, less blood loss, similar postoperative complications, and shorter hospital stay.

Summary: This study compared the surgical outcomes of open hepatectomy with laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for large hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs), finding that LLR resulted in less blood loss and shorter hospital stay than open hepatectomy for large HCCs, with no significant differences in complications, mortality rates, and long-term survival rates between the two groups.

Liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with clinically significant portal hypertension

Daniel Azoulay et al.

Summary: In highly specialised liver centres, patients with cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and HVPG >= 10 mmHg can undergo liver resection with acceptable mortality, morbidity, and liver decompensation rates. The laparoscopic approach is the sole predictor of achieving a textbook outcome.

Laparoscopic and open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis: multicentre propensity score-matched study

R. Troisi et al.

Summary: For patients with Child-Pugh B cirrhosis undergoing liver resection for HCC, laparoscopic surgery is associated with lower blood loss, lower morbidity, and shorter hospital stay compared to open surgery. However, the 5-year overall and disease-free survival rates do not significantly differ between the two approaches. Patients without preoperative portal hypertension and Child-Pugh B7 cirrhosis may benefit most from laparoscopic liver surgery.
