DUSP-1 Induced by PGE2 and PGE1 Attenuates IL-1β-Activated MAPK Signaling, Leading to Suppression of NGF Expression in Human Intervertebral Disc Cells

Takuya Kusakabe et al.

Summary: The molecular mechanism of discogenic low back pain involves nonphysiological nerve invasion into a degenerated intervertebral disc induced by nerve growth factor. Selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors are used to treat low back pain by suppressing the inflammatory mediator prostaglandin E-2. However, it was found that prostaglandins PGE(2) and PGE(1) can suppress the expression of nerve growth factor induced by IL-1 beta.

Applications of the Chick Chorioallantoic Membrane as an Alternative Model for Cancer Studies

Pei-Yu Chu et al.

Summary: The chick CAM model has been a valuable alternative in oncology research, showing increased xenograft take rates and retention of tumor heterogeneity. Various imaging techniques and data analysis have been widely applied to study tumor metastasis, angiogenesis, and therapeutic response to novel agents.

β2-adrenergic receptor drives the metastasis and invasion of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma through activating Cdc42 signaling pathway

Chen Gong et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that β2-AR/Cdc42 signaling may enhance the migration and invasion of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cells, leading to metastasis and poor prognosis in PDAC. Overexpression of β2-AR and Cdc42 is associated with lymph node metastasis and TNM stage in PDAC patients.

Regulation of Cisplatin Resistance in Lung Cancer Cells by Nicotine, BDNF, and a β-Adrenergic Receptor Blocker

Ravel Ray et al.

Summary: Nicotine and BDNF treatment decrease the sensitivity of NSCLC cell lines to cisplatin, while treatment with propranolol has the opposite effect. Activation of EGFR and IGF-1R by epinephrine or nicotine reduces cell sensitivity to cisplatin, whereas inhibiting their activation increases sensitivity. Nicotine and BDNF upregulate PI3K and AKT activities, while inhibiting them increases apoptosis and cisplatin sensitivity.

Cancer-Associated Neurogenesis and Nerve-Cancer Cross-talk

Deborah A. Silverman et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that high intratumoral nerve density is associated with poor prognosis and high recurrence rates across various solid tumor types. Cancer cells express neurotrophic markers and release axon-guidance molecules to promote axonogenesis. Tumors recruit new neural progenitors and rewire established nerves to adrenergic phenotypes, which in turn, facilitate cancer progression through various mechanisms such as stimulating angiogenesis and promoting the expansion of cancer stem cells.

Relationship between Blood Vessels and Migration of Neuroblasts in the Olfactory Neurogenic Region of the Rodent Brain

Marcela Martoncikova et al.

Summary: Neural precursors from the subventricular zone migrate along the rostral migratory stream towards the olfactory bulb in the adult brain, where they differentiate into interneurons and integrate into local neuronal circuits. Unlike in the embryonic period, adult neuroblasts in the SVZ can divide during migration and move independently of radial glia in the RMS. Specifically-arranged blood vessels have been found to guide SVZ-derived neuroblasts to the OB and provide signals for migration.

Enhancement of angiogenesis and neurogenesis by intracerebroventricular injection of secretome from human embryonic stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells in ischemic stroke model

Afsaneh Asgari Taei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that conditioned medium (CM) derived from human embryonic mesenchymal stem cells (hESC-MSC) can significantly improve neurological deficits and infarct volume in rats with experimental stroke. Ischemic stroke is associated with higher levels of neurogenesis and angiogenesis markers, and treatment with CM further enhances these markers in the brain regions. This suggests that the therapeutic benefits of CM from hESC-MSCs are mediated through improved neurogenesis and angiogenesis to accelerate the recovery from cerebral ischemic insult.

Role of Venous Endothelial Cells in Developmental and Pathologic Angiogenesis

Heon-Woo Lee et al.

Summary: Venous endothelial cells are identified as the primary subtype responsible for the expansion of angiogenic vascular networks, arteriovenous malformations formation, and pathological angiogenesis. They proliferate, migrate against the blood flow, and differentiate into different types of endothelial cells during both physiological and pathological angiogenesis processes. This highlights the crucial role of venous endothelium in both normal development and disease pathogenesis.
