What are the outcomes of core decompression without augmentation in patients with nontraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head?

Octavian Andronic et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the effectiveness of core decompression for avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The majority of patients showed improvement in symptoms after surgery, but a small percentage had poor clinical outcomes postoperatively. Approximately 38% of patients required total hip replacement at an average of 26 months following core decompression.

Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Safely Healed with Autologous, Expanded, Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in a Multicentric Trial with Minimum 5 Years Follow-Up

Enrique Gomez-Barrena et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the safety and early efficacy of treating early femoral head osteonecrosis with autologous mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) expanded from bone marrow. Results showed that 80% of patients maintained head sphericity and showed bone regeneration at 2 years, with 19% converting to total hip replacement (THR) after 5 years.
