Explainable machine learning models for predicting 30-day readmission in pediatric pulmonary hypertension: A multicenter, retrospective study

Minjie Duan et al.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning model to predict the risk of 30-day readmission in pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), and found that age, length of stay, congenital heart surgery, and nonmedical order discharge were important predicting factors.

Osteoporosis is a novel risk factor of infections and sepsis: A cohort study

Xiaowen Zhang et al.

Summary: Bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with the risk of common infections and sepsis. Higher BMD at the femoral neck and total hip is associated with a decreased risk of pneumonia, urinary tract infection, skin infection, and sepsis. BMD at the lumbar spine is only associated with the risk of skin infection. Participants with osteoporosis have a significantly higher risk of infections and sepsis compared to those with normal BMD.

30-Day Potentially Avoidable Readmissions Due to Adverse Drug Events

Olivia Dalleur et al.

Summary: This study found that approximately 13% of 30-day preventable readmissions were due to adverse drug events. Half of them were due to prescription errors, mainly involving diuretics, analgesics, or antithrombotics, and the other half were due to suboptimal patient monitoring/education, most frequently with antineoplastics. Both of these avoidable causes may represent opportunities to reduce the total drug-related adverse events.

Metabolic syndrome is associated to an increased risk of low bone mineral density in free-living women with suspected osteoporosis

D. Rendina et al.

Summary: MetS is significantly associated with an increased risk of low bone mineral density, with hypertension being a contributing factor to this risk increase, while high fasting glucose levels/diabetes were associated with a reduced risk of low BMD.

In Men With Obesity, T2DM Is Associated With Poor Trabecular Microarchitecture and Bone Strength and Low Bone Turnover

Francesca Vigevano et al.

Summary: In men, the combination of obesity and T2D is associated with reduced bone turnover and poorer trabecular bone microarchitecture and bone strength compared to those who are obese but without T2D, suggesting worse bone disease.

Disease-dependent variations in the timing and causes of readmissions in Germany: A claims data analysis for six different conditions

Carmen Ruff et al.

Summary: The study found that in Germany, heart failure, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or atrial fibrillation were the main reasons for hospital readmissions, with COPD and AMI having the highest specific readmission rates. Multiple comorbidities may lead to readmissions, suggesting a multidisciplinary care approach should be implemented during the index hospitalization.

Association between different obesity phenotypes and hypothyroidism: a study based on a longitudinal health management cohort

Yupeng Wang et al.

Summary: Obese individuals, especially males, have a higher risk of developing hypothyroidism, with differing associations based on obesity phenotypes and age groups. While obesity and metabolic abnormalities are linked to a higher risk of hypothyroidism in males, this association is weaker in females. Further investigation is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of these sex and age differences in the association between obesity phenotypes and hypothyroidism.
