Healthcare Disparities in Atopic Dermatitis in Latin America: A Narrative Review

Jorge Sanchez et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, pruritic skin disease with a complex etiology. In Latin America, the prevalence of AD is high in children and adults. Most patients experience remission in adolescence and adulthood, but there are still a significant number of patients who continue to have symptoms. Access to healthcare services is limited for some patients, leading to healthcare disparities. Recognizing and resolving these disparities is crucial for improving the treatment and quality of life of individuals with AD.

Increased expression of Filaggrin and Claudin-1 in the ocular surface of patients with atopic dermatitis

T. M. P. Callou et al.

Summary: The study found increased expression of FLG and CLDN-1 in the ocular surface of AD patients compared with healthy controls. There was a positive correlation between tear film break-up time (TBUT) and FLG expression, while fluorescein staining was inversely associated with FLG expression.

Atopic Dermatitis in Latin America: A Roadmap to Address Data Collection, Knowledge Gaps, and Challenges

Arturo Borzutzky et al.

Summary: Atopic dermatitis is a systemic, multifactorial disease that causes significant morbidity and healthcare burden in Latin America. However, data on this disease is scarce in the region due to the lack of disease registries and standardized study methodologies. A panel of Latin American experts in atopic dermatitis identified knowledge gaps in the research of this disease, including prevalence, epidemiology, local phenotypes and endotypes, disease severity, specialist distribution, and public health policy. Limited funding and regional heterogeneity are some of the underlying reasons for these gaps that need to be further studied.

Geovanna V. Cardenas et al.

Summary: This study is the first to evaluate FLG loss-of-function variants R501X and 2282del4 in a Latin American population, revealing a similar prevalence of these FLG variant carriers to that of European populations. Among Chileans, FLG variants were significantly associated with asthma but not AD.

Summary: A study on Brazilian adults with atopic dermatitis revealed a high prevalence of the disease, characterized by symptoms like pruritus and erythema mainly affecting flexural and nonflexural areas. Most patients had moderate-to-severe disease and were treated with topical and systemic pharmacological therapies, with some requiring hospitalization. Poor effectiveness, remission, and lack of adherence were the main reasons for treatment changes or discontinuation.
