Neuregulin 4 as a novel adipokine in energy metabolism

Yuanbin Liu et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue regulates energy metabolism and homeostasis through secretion of adipokines, with Nrg4 being a recently discovered adipokine secreted by brown adipose tissue. Nrg4 has the potential to modulate thermogenesis and improve metabolic dysregulation in diseases such as insulin resistance, obesity, fatty liver disease, and diabetes through various mechanisms.

Neuregulin4 Acts on Hypothalamic ErBb4 to Excite Oxytocin Neurons and Preserve Metabolic Homeostasis

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: Nrg4 is an adipose tissue-enriched factor that regulates glucose and lipid metabolism and is closely associated with obesity. It acts on ErbB4 in the hypothalamus, excites PVN neurons, and influences energy balance. Its effects on reducing obesity are mediated through ErbB4-mediated excitation of Oxt release from Oxt neurons.

Treatment of acromegaly has substantial effects on body composition: a long-term follow-up study

Summary: The treatment of acromegaly strongly affects body composition until biochemical disease remission, characterized by an increase in fat mass and a decrease in lean mass. These changes are closely associated with the normalization of IGF-I and are independent of individual therapy.

Beige Adipocyte as the Flame of White Adipose Tissue: Regulation of Browning and Impact of Obesity

Alev Eroglu Altinova

Summary: The browning of white adipose tissue (WAT), which refers to the emergence of beige adipocytes, can be influenced by various factors such as cold, beta (3)-adrenergic stimulation, and excess adiposity. Recent studies suggest that therapies targeting the browning of WAT can be effective in reducing obesity.

Consequences of telomere replication failure: the other end-replication problem

Kirsten A. Brenner et al.

Summary: Telomeres are protective structures at the ends of chromosomes, but they can cause obstacles during replication. Replication stress triggers telomere repair mechanisms, which are error prone and primarily used in tumorigenic contexts. Research suggests that fragile telomeres are ultimately tumor-suppressive and may not require repair.

Data mining analyses for precision medicine in acromegaly: a proof of concept

Joan Gil et al.

Summary: This study aimed to predict the response of acromegaly patients to somatostatin receptor ligands (SRL) using mathematical modeling and clinical information. Accuracy of patient stratification was significantly improved when the cohort was fragmented based on relevant clinical characteristics. The proposed stratification method based on tumor characteristics, sex, age, and multiple biomarkers achieved accuracies ranging from 71% to 95%. The use of data mining offers a promising approach for personalized medicine in acromegaly.

Diabetes, metabolic disease, and telomere length

Feifei Cheng et al.

Summary: Telomeres, repetitive nucleotide sequences at chromosome ends, serve as markers for DNA damage and biological ageing, associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Studies focus on genetic and environmental influences on telomere length regulation, emphasizing the need for further research to understand the link between diabetes and telomere length.

Serum neuregulin 4 (NRG-4) level and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): A case-control study

Helda Tutunchi et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with NAFLD had lower circulating NRG-4 levels compared to the control group. Individuals in the highest quartile of NRG-4 had lower BMI, WC, TG, and HOMA-IR than those in the lowest quartile. Multiple regression analysis showed BMI, WC, TG, HDL-C, and HOMA-IR were independently related to NRG-4 level. The odds of NAFLD decreased by 41% per 1 SD increase in NRG-4 level.

Association Between Body Weight and Telomere Length Is Predominantly Mediated Through C-Reactive Protein

Summary: Obesity is partly mediated by inflammation in its association with leukocyte telomere length, but there are also other noninflammatory mechanisms contributing to the relationship between obesity and LTL attrition.

Association of leukocyte telomere length with metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Xuemin Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that T2DM patients with MetS had significantly longer leukocyte telomere length (LTL) than those without MetS, especially in cases of poor glycemic control. The longer LTL was positively associated with MetS, particularly low levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) in T2DM patients.
