Effect of Insulin Resistance on Recurrence after Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between insulin resistance (IR) and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence in non-diabetic patients who underwent catheter ablation. The results showed that IR patients were more likely to experience AF recurrence. Improving IR status may be a potential target for reducing the postoperative recurrence rate.

Postoperative atrial fibrillation: from mechanisms to treatment

Mario Gaudino et al.

Summary: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication after various surgical procedures, especially cardiac surgery, and is associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased costs, and higher risk of recurrent AF and adverse cardiovascular events. Recent research has provided new insights into the pathophysiology of POAF and proposed novel preventive and therapeutic strategies. This review summarizes the current evidence on the incidence, prevention, and treatment of POAF, and highlights the future directions for clinical research.

Atrial Fibrillation Occurring During Acute Hospitalization: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Janice Y. Chyou et al.

Summary: Acute atrial fibrillation refers to the detection of atrial fibrillation in the context of acute care or acute illness. It is associated with a high risk of long-term atrial fibrillation recurrence and requires clinical attention during acute hospitalization and long-term follow-up. Acute management involves a multipronged approach, including the identification and treatment of triggers, rate/rhythm control, and management of anticoagulation.

The Effect of Mineralocorticoid Receptor 3 Antagonists on Anti-Inflammatory and Anti-Fatty Acid Transport Profile in Patients with Heart Failure

Xiaoran Fu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the regulation of epicardial fat genesis and inflammation-related cell markers by risk factors and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) in patients with cardiovascular disease. The results showed that MRA intake reduced the levels of fatty acid transporters in epicardial fat and upregulated the levels and secretion of an anti-inflammatory marker. These findings suggest the potential role of MRA in the development and remodeling of epicardial fat in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Synergism between obesity and HFpEF on neutrophils phenotype and its regulation by adipose tissue-molecules and SGLT2i dapagliflozin

Cristina Almenglo et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the neutrophil profile in obesity and cardiovascular disease and its regulation by adipose tissue-secretome and dapagliflozin. The results show higher levels of adhesion molecules in neutrophils from obese patients, and dapagliflozin can modulate this upregulation. This study is of significant importance in understanding the relationship between obesity and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Perioperative Beta-Blocker for Atrial Fibrillation after Cardiac Surgery: A Meta-Analysis

Sue Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that perioperative use of beta-blockers can reduce the risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery, especially in patients undergoing procedures other than isolated coronary artery bypass grafting. However, there was no significant improvement in clinical outcomes such as in-hospital mortality and length of stay.

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Rachel Eikelboom et al.

Summary: POAF after cardiac surgery is associated with increased long-term risk of death, highlighting the need for comprehensive prevention and management strategies, including strict follow-up post-discharge. Inconsistent definitions and exclusion criteria for POAF in current studies may impact the accuracy of adjusted analyses. Further research is necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking POAF and long-term mortality.

The Prognostic Potential of Atrial Natriuretic Peptide on the Development of Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation after Cardiac Surgery

Felix Hofer et al.

Summary: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a common complication after cardiac surgery, and the study found that mid-region proANP (MR-proANP) levels were significantly associated with the development of POAF, making it a strong and independent predictor.

The Incidence and Natural Progression of New-Onset Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation

Sahar S. Abdelmoneim et al.

Summary: This study utilized continuous event monitoring to characterize the natural progression of new-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) in patients post cardiac surgery. The findings showed a high recurrence rate within the first month postoperatively, with a majority of patients experiencing recurrences during the 1-12 month follow-up period, decreasing to 30% beyond 1 year.
