The impact of motion artifacts on quantitative optical coherence tomography angiography analysis in Parkinson's disease

Mahdy Ranjbar et al.

Summary: This study suggests that OCTA imaging in PD patients can be challenging and the control of motion artifacts is critical. The data indicate reduced retinal perfusion in both plexuses, which may serve as a noninvasive biomarker in the future.

Longitudinal assessment of type 3 macular neovascularization using 3D volume-rendering OCTA

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the evolution of treatment-naive type 3 macular neovascularization (MNV) undergoing anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment through volume-rendered three-dimensional (3D) optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). It found that type 3 lesions do not disappear completely after loading treatment, and quantitative volume changes in type 3 lesions are directly associated with treatment response.

OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY ASSESSMENT OF THE DIABETIC MACULA A Comparison Study Among Different Algorithms

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of histogram adjustments and binarization thresholding selection on quantitative measurements of diabetic macular ischemia using OCTA. Results showed that binarized images obtained using a global threshold had better quality, while local thresholds tended to generate higher values of measured metrics in quantitative analysis. Differences in OCTA metrics between healthy and DR eyes were significantly affected by binarization threshold selection.

Volume rendered 3D OCTA assessment of macular ischemia in patients with type 1 diabetes and without diabetic retinopathy

Enrico Borrelli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to measure macular perfusion in patients with type 1 diabetes without signs of diabetic retinopathy using OCTA. Comparing with a control group, diabetic patients showed reduced 3D perfusion density, particularly at the level of the deep vascular complex (DVC).

Recent advances in wide field and ultrawide field optical coherence tomography angiography in retinochoroidal pathologies

Gagan Kalra et al.

Summary: The importance of expanded field-of-view (FOV) in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) imaging has been illustrated for various retinochoroidal diseases, with software and hardware methods playing crucial roles in achieving this. Overcoming hardware-based limitations and improving software tools and image processing algorithms are crucial steps towards enhancing the utility of ultra-wide field (UWF) OCTA for patient care.

The impact of different thresholds on optical coherence tomography angiography images binarization and quantitative metrics

Alessandro Arrigo et al.

Summary: This study tested thirteen binarization thresholds on a dataset of thirty volunteers to evaluate their impact on the detection of retinal capillaries, quantitative OCTA metrics, and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) detection. The findings identified Huang, Li, Mean, and Percentile thresholds as highly reliable, while Intermodes, MaxEntropy, RenylEntropy, and Yen thresholds were considered the worst. The study also found that all thresholds consistently underestimated vessel density (VD) metric and FAZ detection with varying degrees of stability for vessel tortuosity (VT) and vessel dispersion (Vdisp). The usage of a Fixed threshold showed promise in reducing VD and FAZ underestimations, highlighting the importance of operator experience.
