A Genomic Perspective Across Earth's Microbiomes Reveals That Genome Size in Archaea and Bacteria Is Linked to Ecosystem Type and Trophic Strategy

Alejandro Rodriguez-Gijon et al.

Summary: Our understanding of the size of genomes in Archaea and Bacteria has been biased due to the dominance of cultivated microorganisms in laboratory settings. However, the recent efforts to study uncultivated microorganisms through the cataloging of Earth's microbiomes allow us to revise our perspective on genome size distribution. In our meta-analysis, we found that aquatic and host-associated microbial genomes have the smallest estimated sizes, followed by terrestrial microbial genomes and genomes from isolated microorganisms. The study also highlights the similarities in genome size between metagenomic assembled genomes and isolate genomes.

Halalkalibacterium roseum gen. nov., sp. nov., a new member of the family Balneolaceae isolated from soil

Shuge Wu et al.

Summary: A halophilic and facultatively anaerobic bacterium, YR4-1(T), was isolated from a saline-alkali and sorghum-planting soil sample in Dongying, Shandong Province, China. This bacterium showed growth at a range of temperatures and NaCl concentrations, and possessed genes related to osmotic stress response and diverse metabolic pathways. Phylogenetic analysis revealed its similarity to Aliifodinibius species and its placement within the Balneolaceae family at the genus level.

Subsurface and surface halophile communities of the chaotropic Salar de Uyuni

Jose M. Martinez et al.

Summary: Salar de Uyuni is a polyextreme environment with a more heterogeneous bacterial community than the archaeal community, both of which vary geographically and seasonally. The most abundant genera in SdU include Salinibacter, Halonotius, and Halorubrum, with unidentified archaea also present. Studies of subsurface samples have provided an evolutionary record of a multilayer hypersaline ecosystem.

Genomic Insights Into New Species of the Genus Halomicroarcula Reveals Potential for New Osmoadaptative Strategies in Halophilic Archaea

Ana Duran-Viseras et al.

Summary: Metagenomic studies in hypersaline soils from South-west Spain revealed a high proportion of genomic sequences not related to previously cultivated taxa, potentially haloarchaea. Culturomics approach was used to isolate four new haloarchaeal strains related to Halomicroarcula genus, which were determined to be three new species. Comparative genomic analysis showed these haloarchaea have unique osmoregulatory mechanisms for adaptive growth in high salt environments.

Halophilic Prokaryotes in Urmia Salt Lake, a Hypersaline Environment in Iran

Fereshteh Jookar Kashi et al.

Summary: The study used FISH and PCR to determine prokaryotic diversity in Urmia Salt Lake. It found that the prokaryote cell populations were more diverse and abundant than expected in this hypersaline environment, with bacteria forming the metabolically active part of the microbial population. Molecular approaches revealed different aspects of the microbiota in this extreme environment.
