Tunable structured light with flat optics

Ahmed H. Dorrah et al.

Summary: Flat optics, with its subwavelength resolution, ease of integration, and compact design, has become a crucial player in the field of structured light and its applications. The new generation of meta-optics can shape the light and dark features of an optical field with unprecedented complexity and multifunctionality. These advancements have the potential to revolutionize camera systems, microscopes, holography, portable devices, and wearable technology, and may also open up new possibilities in optical communications and sensing.

Creating and moving nanoantenna cold spots anywhere

Alex J. Vernon et al.

Summary: We demonstrate a method to create and move sub-wavelength cold spots by manipulating the polarization, amplitude, and phase of plane waves. By exploiting the cancellation between scattered light and far-field illumination near a nanoantenna, we can create a zero-magnitude and highly sub-wavelength cold spot around a nanoantenna of any shape. This technique has potential applications in nanoscale sensing.

Topological polarization singularities in metaphotonics

Wenzhe Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent research on the generation and observation of polarization singularities in metaphotonics, including discussions on polarization singularities in Mie theory, various photonic-crystal structures, and conversions from polarization to phase singularities. The authors suggest that polarization singularities can provide novel perspectives for light-matter manipulation.

Particle-like topologies in light

Danica Sugic et al.

Summary: This study experimentally creates and measures a topological 3D skyrmionic hopfion in fully structured light, establishing the skyrmionic mapping by adjusting both polarization and phase profiles. The resulting light field's Stokes parameters and phase are synthesized into a Hopf fibration texture, allowing for volumetric full-field reconstruction of the Pi(3) mapping and measurement of a quantized topological charge. This research opens new avenues for 3D optical data encoding and metrology, providing experimentally-accessible photonic analogues to various particle-like 3D topological textures.
