Organic Semiconductor-Organism Interfaces for Augmenting Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: Carbon neutrality is recognized as a crucial approach to addressing climate change and sustainable development, with improving photosynthetic efficiency playing a key role in achieving this goal. Conjugated polymers can act as artificial antennas to enhance photosynthetic efficiency in a variety of organisms and can be applied in biological photovoltaics and artificial carbon sequestration systems. Additionally, their ability to accelerate electron transfer rates at material-organism interfaces provides insights for future designs of photosynthetic systems.

Living Bacteria-Mediated Aerobic Photoinduced Radical Polymerization for in Situ Bacterial Encapsulation and Differentiation

Huan Lu et al.

Summary: An alternative photoinduced polymerization strategy was developed for preparing functional polymer hydrogels through bacteria-initiated radical polymerization of acrylamides in ordinary culture media. The use of various bacteria under light irradiation converted dissolved oxygen to hydroxyl radicals, initiating polymerization to achieve polyacrylamides with high molecular weights. The mild conditions allowed for in situ bacterial encapsulation and differentiation based on their gelation behavior properties and oxygen tolerance.

Estimating a social cost of carbon for global energy consumption

Ashwin Rode et al.

Summary: The research suggests that releasing one ton of CO2 today is projected to reduce total future energy expenditures, contradicting previous studies. It is predicted that emerging economies in the tropics will greatly increase electricity consumption as global mean surface temperature rises, while reductions in heating in colder countries will offset this growth.

Double sulfur vacancies by lithium tuning enhance CO2 electroreduction to n-propanol

Chen Peng et al.

Summary: Electrochemical CO2 reduction to valuable products like n-propanol is hindered by poor selectivities and low yields. Here, researchers demonstrate that double sulfur vacancies on hexagonal copper sulfide can serve as efficient electrocatalytic centers for stabilizing key intermediates, leading to high Faradaic efficiency towards n-propanol.

Technical-scale biophotovoltaics for long-term photo-current generation from Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

Bin Lai et al.

Summary: Biophotovoltaics (BPV) offers a promising solution for hydrogen supply by coupling light-driven water splitting to hydrogen formation using oxygenic photoautotrophic cyanobacteria. However, current limitations in photon-to-current efficiency and experimental equipment hinder research progress. By developing a new technical-scale BPV platform with optimized parameters and identifying interfering factors, reproducible and stable current output signals were achieved. The use of an optimized nBG11 medium helped minimize background interferences, allowing for reliable and quantitative investigation, optimization, and scale-up of BPV processes.
