Osmotrophy of dissolved organic carbon by coccolithophores in darkness

Jelena Godrijan et al.

Summary: Coccolithophores are capable of surviving and maintaining metabolism in darkness for up to 30 days, achieving approximately one cell division. The incorporation of dissolved organic matter into particulate inorganic carbon also raises fundamental questions about the role of the alkalinity pump and the alkalinity balance in the sea.

Physiological and Biochemical Characterization of Isolated Bacteria from a Coccolithophore Chrysotila dentata (Prymnesiophyceae) Culture

Xueru Wang et al.

Summary: Coccolithophores play important roles in oceanic carbon and nitrogen cycles and have an impact on global climate change. In this study, culturable phycosphere bacteria associated with Chrysotila dentata were isolated and identified. The results showed that the isolated bacteria mainly belonged to α-proteobacteria and γ-proteobacteria, with a small part of CFB group bacteria and firmicutes. The bacteria exhibited different characteristics in terms of their colony characteristics, Gram nature, and physiological and biochemical properties. The findings provided basic experimental data for further understanding the relationship between coccolithophores and culturable phycosphere bacteria.

The Ocean's labile DOC supply chain

Mary Ann Moran et al.

Summary: Microbes in the surface ocean play a crucial role in releasing, consuming, and exchanging labile metabolites at short time scales. However, the details of this process in the global carbon cycle are not well understood due to methodological challenges. A new compilation of published data suggests that approximately half of the ocean's net primary production is processed through the labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool, with contributions from living phytoplankton, dead and dying phytoplankton, and heterotrophic microbes and mesoplankton.

Allometry of carbon and nitrogen content and growth rate in a diverse range of coccolithophores

Naomi Villiot et al.

Summary: Coccolithophores, as photoautotrophs and calcifiers, play important roles in ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. Low-latitude communities exhibit high diversity and niche diversification. Results show that coccolithophore cell size is constrained, growth rates scale with cell biovolume, and organic carbon content per cell is lower compared to other phytoplankton.
