A hierarchical decomposition of internal wave fields

Thomas E. Dobra et al.

Summary: We decompose internal gravity wave fields into temporal modes to reveal the hierarchical structure of nonlinear wave-wave interactions. By using a novel fusion of Green's functions and a weakly nonlinear perturbation expansion, we present a semi-analytical approach for solving the forced internal wave equation. This approach is computationally efficient and allows for the study of wave-wave interactions in various wave-governed systems.

Experiments in Surface Gravity-Capillary Wave Turbulence

Eric Falcon et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been a significant increase in wave turbulence studies, particularly in the field of water waves. The theoretical modeling of ocean waves, which has driven the development of weak turbulence theory, has been found to be too idealized to capture experimental observations. Laboratory observations have revealed that the waves studied are actually gravity-capillary waves, as opposed to ocean waves. This richer physics has led to various physical effects beyond the theoretical framework, especially in the gravity-capillary crossover region.

Experimental observations of internal wave turbulence transition in a stratified fluid

Costanza Rodda et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the dynamical regimes occurring in a stratified fluid experimentally forced by internal gravity waves in a bounded domain. The study finds that by changing the shape and dimensions of the domain, finite-size effects diminish and wave turbulence is observed. Different turbulence regimes appear based on the forcing conditions.

Internal gravity waves in a stratified layer atop a convecting liquid core in a non-rotating spherical shell

M. Bouffard et al.

Summary: Seismic and magnetic observations suggest the presence of a stably stratified layer atop Earth's core, which may impact the morphology of the geomagnetic field and the evolution of the core. This study focuses on internal gravity waves (IGW) in stratified layers, finding that energy distribution depends on the Prandtl number and the mean kinetic energy in the layer is about 0.1 percent that of the convective region in the absence of rotational and magnetic effects.

Long-time dynamics of internal wave streaming

Timothee Jamin et al.

Summary: The study investigates the evolution of mean flow induced by a three-dimensional propagating internal gravity wave beam in a uniformly stratified fluid, revealing three distinct stages: resonant growth, saturation of streaming and onset of horizontal advection, and establishment of a quasi-steady state. The theoretical model proposed in this study, which extends previous work by accounting for horizontal advection and viscous diffusion effects, is in excellent agreement with experimental observations and numerical simulations.

Internal and inertia-gravity wave focusing at large Stokes numbers

Natalia Shmakova et al.

Summary: The experimental study focused on the geometric focusing of internal waves by the horizontal oscillation of a torus in a stratified or rotating stratified fluid. The results showed that for large Stokes numbers, the waves are bimodal and generate four focal regions where the waves emitted from different sides of the torus meet.

Downscale energy fluxes in scale-invariant oceanic internal wave turbulence

Giovanni Dematteis et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the scale-invariant stationary solution to the internal-wave kinetic equation, finding that the main contributions to resonant energy transfers come from triads with extreme scale separation and quasi-collinear waves in the horizontal plane. Using the modified scale-invariant limit of the Garrett and Munk spectrum of internal waves, the magnitude of energy flux towards high wavenumbers in both vertical and horizontal directions was calculated, showing favorable comparison with finescale parametrization of ocean mixing proposed by Polzin et al.

Energy balance and mixing between waves and eddies in stably stratified turbulence

H. Lam et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the strong stratification regime of stably stratified turbulence and the viscosity-affected stratified state, decomposing the three-dimensional velocity-density fields into internal gravity waves (IGWs) and eddy motion. Separate evolution equations for IGWs and eddies are established. At Re-b around 1, a significant exchange of energy from IGWs to eddies is observed, while for Re-b > 1, the dynamics of IGWs and eddies appear to be separate with no global energy exchange. The mixing due to eddies is found to be four times greater than that due to waves at the largest Re-b considered.

Three-dimensionality of the triadic resonance instability of a plane inertial wave

Daniel Odens Mora et al.

Summary: By theoretical analysis and numerical integration, we investigated the triadic resonance instability (TRI) of a plane inertial wave in a rotating fluid, showing that the maximum growth rate of the TRI is found for secondary waves that do not propagate in the same vertical plane as the primary wave. Experimental evidence confirms the three-dimensional nature of the TRI of a plane inertial wave, with wave vectors of secondary waves matching theoretical predictions based on the maximum growth rate criterion.
