Shared signatures and divergence in skin microbiomes of children with atopic dermatitis and their caregivers

Minghao Chia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the skin microbiome sharing and microbial features in children with AD and their healthy adult caregivers. The results showed distinct microbiome configurations in the nonlesional skin of AD children and their caregivers compared to controls, which accurately predicted case-control status. Microbiome similarity between children and their caregivers indicated that microbiome sharing may play a role in recurrent disease flares.

Relationship between dental and periodontal health status and the salivary microbiome: bacterial diversity, co-occurrence networks and predictive models

M. Relvas et al.

Summary: This study used 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to assess the impact of different grades of dental and periodontal disease on salivary microbiome. The presence of both dental and periodontal pathology was found to enhance the richness and diversity of salivary microbiota. The structure of the bacterial community in oral health differs significantly from that in dental, periodontal, or oral disease.

Comparison of Blood Bacterial Communities in Periodontal Health and Periodontal Disease

David C. Emery et al.

Summary: The use of Next Generation Sequencing techniques has led to a wide variety of blood microbiome data, with a large portion being bacteria from the oral cavity. Oral bacteria, especially those associated with periodontal diseases, are commonly linked to various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and Alzheimer's disease.

Defining and quantifying the core microbiome: Challenges and prospects

Alexander T. Neu et al.

Summary: The term core microbiome refers to a set of microbial taxa or attributes associated with those taxa that are characteristic of a host or environment, with little consensus on how it should be quantified in practice. Various metrics have been used, but many are susceptible to biases, highlighting the need for standardized metrics for studying core microbiomes.
