Construction noise management: A systematic review and directions for future research

Mostafa Mir et al.

Summary: Construction noise is a significant and widespread occupational hazard in the construction industry. By implementing an effective noise management process, the negative effects of construction noise can be mitigated. However, there is a fragmented research landscape in the field of construction noise management, and a comprehensive review is needed to identify research themes, gaps, and recommendations for future research. This study introduces a new construction noise management framework and categorizes previous studies, providing researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive understanding of the process and its implications for workplace health and safety.

Investigating the effects of different levels and types of construction noise on emotions using EEG data

Mostafa Mir et al.

Summary: This study used EEG data to investigate the effects of different types and levels of construction noise on emotions. The subjective data obtained from the questionnaires showed significant effects of the noise on the annoyance and stress perceived by the participants. The analysis of the EEG data also showed significant effects of different types and levels of construction noise on the brain signals, particularly in the frontal and temporal lobes. These findings provide important insights for revisiting noise regulations and protecting individuals from the negative health effects of construction noise.

Effects of Noise Exposure and Mental Workload on Physiological Responses during Task Execution

Yurong Fan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological response of individuals to different noise exposure and mental workload conditions. The findings indicated that physiological responses were unaffected by noise exposure during rest, but increased sound pressure levels and sharpness were significantly correlated with changes in pupil diameter and heart rate variability during task execution. Increased mental demands led to increased stress and decreased task performance, indicating an inverted U-shaped relationship between workload level and work performance.

Effects of Industrial Noise on Physiological Responses

Massimiliano Masullo et al.

Summary: Noise pollution is a common workplace hazard that can have physiological and psychological effects on employees. This study explored the effects of different types and levels of industrial noises on electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate variations. The results showed that EDA increased with higher sound levels, particularly in high frequency noises. However, no significant changes were found in heart rate variations. The study also found that EDA changes were related to the perception of the noise environment's valence, while heart rate variations were not.

Assessment of noise annoyance level of shield tunneling machine drivers under noisy environments based on combined physiological activities

Xuejiao Xing et al.

Summary: Noise annoyance is recognized as a psychological burden in acoustic environments, closely related to workers' cognitive and decision-making abilities. Shield tunneling machine drivers should maintain a healthy mindset to avoid severe annoyance effects. Through screening and training based on an assessment model, potential operational risks can be mitigated and workers' adaptability to noisy environments can be improved.
