The eSports Medicine: Pre-Participation Screening and Injuries Management-An Update

Agostino Rossoni et al.

Summary: Recently, eSports has emerged as a popular form of new media, thanks to the widespread availability of games and online technologies. Despite ongoing discussions about its definition, eSports athletes undergo rigorous training, compete in tournaments, and must follow rules set by governing bodies, just like traditional athletes. However, like any competitive discipline, eSports players are susceptible to injuries related to their sedentary lifestyle, improper posture, prolonged screen time, and repetitive movements. This paper highlights the importance of conducting pre-participation evaluations and implementing effective injury prevention strategies for professional eSports athletes.

COVID-19 in children: I. Epidemiology, prevention and indirect impacts

Annaleise R. Howard-Jones et al.

Summary: Children globally have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with both direct and indirect public health effects. Indirect impacts, such as mental health risks, disruption to family income, and prolonged loss of face-to-face learning, will have long-term consequences beyond the immediate pandemic period. Pediatricians play a key role in advocating for this vulnerable group to ensure the full consideration of the longer-term effects of COVID-19 public health responses on the health and wellbeing of children.

Paediatric and adolescent athletes in Switzerland: age-adapted proposals for pre-participation cardiovascular evaluation

Maciej Albinski et al.

Summary: This study develops age-specific preparticipation cardiovascular evaluation proposals for paediatric and adolescent athletes in Switzerland. The recommendations include medical history and physical examination as part of the evaluation. It is suggested that athletes above the age of 12, with a training load of at least 6 hours per week, undergo preparticipation cardiovascular evaluation. Post-pubertal athletes (or older than 15 years) are recommended to have a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram evaluation. Echocardiography should be used for further investigation of abnormalities. Regular follow-up examinations are recommended for all athletes, even those with normal findings. Athletes with abnormal findings should be further investigated and consult with a paediatric cardiologist.

Paediatric and adolescent athletes in Switzerland: age-adapted proposals for pre-participation cardiovascular evaluation

Maciej Albinski et al.

Summary: The article proposes preparticipation cardiovascular evaluation recommendations for Swiss paediatric and adolescent athletes, including assessment based on medical history and physical examination from the age of 12, as well as electrocardiogram evaluation for post-pubertal athletes. It emphasizes the need for further investigation and discussion with a paediatric cardiologist for athletes with abnormal findings, and highlights that the recommendations do not apply to patients with congenital heart disease.

Cardiac manifestations in SARS-CoV-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a comprehensive review and proposed clinical approach

Francesca Sperotto et al.

Summary: Initial reports indicated that children were less affected by severe COVID-19 symptoms, but clusters of pediatric cases with severe systemic hyperinflammation and shock linked to COVID-19 have emerged since mid-April 2020. This condition, defined as SARS-CoV-2-associated multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, shares similarities with Kawasaki disease. Patients often present with persistent fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, conjunctivitis, and mucosal changes, along with elevated inflammatory markers and cytokine storm. Management involves cardiac support, immunomodulation, and anticoagulation during the acute phase, with long-term follow-up crucial due to uncertain prognosis and potential cardiac complications.

Summary: A study on the health of adolescent athletes during COVID-19-related school closures and sport cancellations in the United States found that females reported a higher prevalence of moderate to severe anxiety symptoms, with depression symptoms being most prevalent in team sport participants and least prevalent in individual sport participants. Additionally, athletes from counties with higher poverty levels had lower overall quality of life scores compared to those from counties with lower poverty levels.
