X-linked Malformation Deafness: Neurodevelopmental Symptoms Are Common in Children With IP3 Malformation and Mutation in POU3F4

Henrik Smeds et al.

Summary: IP3 malformation deafness is a rare hereditary condition that causes hearing loss, and children with this condition may also have neurodevelopmental and mental health issues. Cochlear implantation is a feasible option for hearing restoration in these children, but requires a multidisciplinary team approach to address their overall healthcare needs.

Systematic Review on Vestibular Symptoms in Patients With Enlarged Vestibular Aqueducts

Maximilian C. Stahl et al.

Summary: The proportion of patients with EVA reporting vestibular dysfunction varies significantly. Performing vestibular function testing can help identify asymptomatic patients with vestibular dysfunction, and future studies should focus on improving treatment of vestibular symptoms in EVA patients.

Postural Control in Subjects with Incomplete Partition Inner Ear Malformations: A Comparison of Incomplete Partition Types

Gorkem Ertugrul et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated differences in postural control abilities among subjects with the same type of IP on both sides. Although the IP-II group showed better balance scores, there were no significant differences compared to the other IP groups. Regular vestibular assessments and vestibular rehabilitation may support postural control abilities for subjects with IP.

Comparison of vestibular ocular reflex and gross motor development in children with semicircular canal aplasia and hypoplasia

Yusuke Kimura et al.

Summary: This study examined the effect of vestibular ocular reflex on gross motor development in children with semi-circular canal aplasia and hypoplasia. It found that children with semi-circular canal aplasia have severe dysfunction of the vestibular ocular reflex, while children with semi-circular canal hypoplasia may still have vestibular sensory cells and develop rotary nystagmus similar to normal children. The study also suggested that the combination of visual impairment and mental retardation may delay motor development in these children.

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct and Mondini Malformation: audiological, clinical, radiologic and genetic features

F. Forli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to analyse the clinical and audiological features of a cohort of Caucasian patients with NSEVA/PDS, genetic assessment and inner ear morphology. The results showed a significant correlation between SLC26A4 mutations and the presence of PDS, as well as differences in severity of hearing loss between PDS and NSEVA patients.

Postural instability in children with severe inner ear malformations: Characteristics of vestibular and balance function

Gorkem Ertugrul et al.

Summary: Children with severe inner ear malformations demonstrated higher postural instability compared to those with normal inner ear structures and healthy peers. The level of deficiency in the labyrinthine was more crucial for postural stability in children.

Vestibular impairment in cochlear implanted children presenting enlarged vestibular aqueduct and enlarged endolymphatic sac

Summary: In children with EVA undergoing CI surgery, those with a larger endolymphatic sac volume are more likely to experience postoperative vestibular complications. Therefore, MRI measurement of the ES volume should be performed systematically to minimize this risk before CI surgery.

Genetics of Inner Ear Malformations: A Review

Davide Brotto et al.

Summary: Inner ear malformations are present in 20% of patients with sensorineural hearing loss. Recent advancements in genetics have shed light on the possible relationship between inner ear malformations and genetic anomalies. However, much remains unknown about the etiology of these anomalies.
