Engineering probiotics to inhibit Clostridioides difficile infection by dynamic regulation of intestinal metabolism

Elvin Koh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that engineering probiotics to restore intestinal bile salt metabolism can effectively inhibit Clostridioides difficile infection, presenting a microbiome-based antimicrobial strategy. The engineered probiotics limited the growth of C. difficile in vitro and significantly reduced CDI in model mice, indicating their potential as an intervention for this infection.

Summary: NEC, a disease of prematurity, is associated with AHR signaling. Administration of AHR ligands during pregnancy and postnatally can prevent NEC. AHR signaling plays a crucial role in the development of NEC and may be a potential therapeutic target for NEC.

Lactobacillus reuteri in Its Biofilm State Improves Protection from Experimental Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Ameer Al-Hadidi et al.

Summary: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating disease mainly found in premature infants, associated with gastrointestinal dysbiosis. Probiotics have been proposed as a new avenue for therapy, with a novel enterally delivered formulation showing promise in experimental models of NEC.
