Splenomegaly in Kawasaki Disease: A Pitfall in Diagnosis

Francesca Miselli et al.

Summary: Among 365 children diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, only 5 (1.4%) had splenomegaly, with 2 of them complicated by macrophage activation syndrome and 3 ultimately diagnosed with alternative systemic illness. Splenomegaly is an atypical manifestation in Kawasaki disease and may indicate underlying complications such as macrophage activation syndrome or other diagnoses.

Appendicitis as a Leading Manifestation of Kawasaki Disease in Older Children

Ya-Ning Huang et al.

Summary: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect multiple organs. This case report highlights the atypical presentation of KD as appendicitis in a five-year-old boy. It emphasizes the importance of considering KD in children with abdominal complaints, especially those with persistent fever after appendectomy.

Clinical aspects and presumed etiology of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C): A review

Anusrita Kundu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the clinical characteristics and prognosis of pediatric patients with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. A comparison with other clinical conditions is provided. The possible etiology and fundamental mechanism of inflammatory reactions, as well as the involvement of androgen receptors in asymptomatic illness in children, are discussed.

Clinical Features in Children With Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Zhimin Zheng et al.

Summary: The study aimed to identify the clinical features of Kawasaki Disease Shock Syndrome (KDSS) in children. The results showed that children with KDSS had more severe indicators of inflammation and more cardiac abnormalities compared to non-shocked KD. These patients were resistant to immunoglobulin treatment and required extra anti-inflammatory treatment.

Defining Kawasaki disease and pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome-temporally associated to SARS-CoV-2 infection during SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Italy: results from a national, multicenter survey

Marco Cattalini et al.

Summary: The study indicates that SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to two distinct inflammatory diseases in children: Kawasaki Disease and PIMS-TS. Older age and clinical peculiarities like myocarditis characterize this multi-inflammatory syndrome, with patients showing optimal response to treatments, few complications, and no deaths.
