Environmental and Economic Assessments of Hydrogen Utilization in the Transportation Sector of Iran

Leila Fayazi Rad et al.

Summary: The Iranian transportation industry is an energy-intensive sector with various destructive environmental effects. This paper determines and discusses the levelized cost, technical parameters, and CO2 emissins of different hydrogen production methods. It concludes that steam methane reforming is a clean and efficient method, while electrolysis process can generate the maximum amount of hydrogen.

Environmental impact of renewable energy source based electrical power plants: Solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, geothermal, tidal, ocean, and osmotic

Abidur Rahman et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the environmental impacts of renewable energy source (RES) based power plants, including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydroelectric, tidal, ocean current, oceanic wave, ocean thermal, and osmotic effects. The SWOT analysis is conducted for all RES based power plants, and the comparative environmental impact analyses are presented. It is found that careful selection of RES is necessary to prevent harm to the environment.

Exploring the penetration of renewable energy at increasing the boundaries of the urban energy system - The PRISMI plus toolkit application to Monachil, Spain

Siamak Hoseinzadeh et al.

Summary: Urban energy system analysis requires setting the boundaries of the closed system, but the limits imposed by the Municipality do not capture the full extent of the energy supply. Expanding renewable energy installations can involve more territories and bring benefits to the local energy mix. The study shows that including surrounding areas can lead to more effective penetration of renewable energy and diversify investments, but it also comes with increased costs.

Life Cycle Assessment of Substitute Natural Gas production from biomass and electrolytic hydrogen

Eleonora Bargiacchi et al.

Summary: This study compares six different layouts for the production of SNG and electricity using biomass and fluctuating electricity, finding that the layout based on hydrogasification has the lowest environmental impacts in most cases. The selection of functional units and different approaches dealing with co-production of electricity also significantly influence technology ranking.

A review of LCA assumptions impacting whether landfilling or incineration results in less greenhouse gas emissions

Malak Anshassi et al.

Summary: The focus of the study was to compare landfill and MSWI treatment, identifying key LCA assumptions that influenced the results. Landfill was found to be more favorable with high gas collection and gas-to-energy recovery efficiency, while MSWI was favored with energy recovery offsets. Tailoring an LCA analysis based on waste composition, gas management, and energy grid showed landfilling and MSWI treatment were influenced by these factors.

Global mortality from outdoor fine particle pollution generated by fossil fuel combustion: Results from GEOS-Chem

Karn Vohra et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant impact of the fossil fuel component of PM2.5 on global premature mortality. The steeper concentration-response function slope at lower concentrations leads to higher estimates in Europe and North America, while the slower drop-off in slope at higher concentrations results in higher estimates in Asia.
