A corncob biochar-based superhydrophobic photothermal coating with micro-nano-porous rough-structure for ice-phobic properties

Zhiyuan Liu et al.

Summary: The utilization of biomass resources promotes the advancement of low-carbon technology, and combining it with superhydrophobic materials for ice-phobic coatings on wind turbine blades is beneficial for environmental protection and clean energy development. In this study, a Fe3O4-loaded biochar-based superhydrophobic ice-phobic coating with photothermal conversion effect was prepared from corncob. The combination of decreased oxygen-to-carbon ratio and rough surface structure resulted in the superhydrophobicity of the coating. Experimental results showed a reduction in blade icing mass of up to 32.71% due to the generation of droplet bounce. The biochar-based materials efficiently absorbed optical energy and vibrational heat production, leading to a temperature increase of 55.9 degrees C and an enhanced de-icing rate of 42.71%. This study provides new insights for the application of biomass resources in anti-icing/de-icing for wind energy.

An Experimental Study on Adhesion Strength of Offshore Atmospheric Icing on a Wind Turbine Blade Airfoil

Zhongqiu Mu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the ice adhesion strength on wind turbine blades under offshore atmospheric conditions. The results show that salt content has the most significant impact on ice adhesion strength, followed by ambient temperature and wind speed. The interaction between wind speed and salt content, as well as ambient temperature and salt content, is extremely significant. This research can serve as a reference for anti-icing strategies for offshore wind turbines.

Effects of blade airfoil chord length and rotor diameter on aerodynamic performance of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbines by numerical simulation

Guoqiang Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbines (SB-VAWTs) were investigated using numerical simulation, with a focus on the effects of airfoil chord length and rotor diameter. A dimensionless parameter RCC was proposed and its recommended ranges were determined for different scenarios. The study confirms the significance of RCC in the design of SB-VAWTs and provides practical references for the parametric structural design.
