Hydrogels: A 'stepping stone' towards new cleaning strategies for biodeteriorated surfaces

E. Boccalon et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel PVA-borax hydrogel containing antimicrobial active ingredients was designed and tested on biodeteriorated stones. The hydrogels with silver nanoparticles and thyme essential oil were found to be the most efficient cleaning systems, opening up new possibilities for bioremediation. The effects of the treatments were assessed through staining techniques and colony forming unit assays specific to bacteria, fungi, and algae.

Changes in heterotrophic microbial communities induced by biocidal treatments in the Monastery of San Martino Pinario (Santiago de Compostela, NW Spain)

P. Sanmartin et al.

Summary: The study found that benzalkonium chloride and water treatments were most effective in preventing bacterial recolonization, while Biotin T was most effective in preventing fungal recolonization after the application of biocidal treatments to remove Apatococcus lobatus from granite walls. Despite no increase in bacterial numbers after treatment, the diversity of bacterial populations was altered.

A laboratory approach on the combined effects of granite bioreceptivity and parameters modified by climate change on the development of subaerial biofilms on cultural heritage

Elsa Fuentes et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of climate change on the conservation of cultural heritage buildings and monuments through the interaction between substrate bioreceptivity and environmental parameters. Water availability was found to be a limiting factor for the growth and photosynthetic efficiency of colonizing microorganisms, while metabolic reactions were enhanced at higher temperatures. The microbial ecology shifted, leading to a higher proportion of cyanobacteria relative to algae.

Essential oils of Portuguese flavouring plants: potential as green biocides in cultural heritage

Silvia Macedo-Arantes et al.

Summary: Microbial biodeterioration in cultural heritage is becoming a growing problem, and traditional biocides used to control it have toxic effects. Essential oils (EOs) are considered a sustainable and safe alternative due to their antimicrobial potential and low toxicity. Encapsulation of EOs, such as T. vulgaris, can improve their antifungal activity. Overall, EOs have the potential to be eco-friendly, biodegradable, and non-toxic biocides, providing a green and effective solution compared to traditional biocides.

Role of Exposure on the Microbial Consortiums on Historical Rural Granite Buildings

Elsa Fuentes et al.

Summary: The study characterized the microbial consortium forming biofilms on historical rural granite buildings for the first time, revealing differences compared to urban granite buildings, especially in terms of cyanobacteria and lichenized fungi abundance. Exposure and orientation were identified as important factors influencing the diversity and abundance of microorganisms on walls, with northern orientation favoring a higher diversity of fungi and green algae, and west orientation determining the abundance of lichenized fungi.

Essential oils mixtures as an eco-friendly biocidal solution for a marble statue restoration

Mariagiulia Spada et al.

Summary: Researchers successfully applied essential oils mixtures for biocidal treatment on the statue, ensuring better contact with the patina using different carriers. The low concentrations used are non-toxic to humans and do not lead to environmental bioaccumulation, setting an important precedent for biocidal treatment on outdoor stone heritage. Ongoing monitoring will track the long-lasting effects of the treatments on the statue.

Beatriz Prieto et al.

Summary: A series of studies over the past 20 years investigated the potential alterations caused by herbicide treatments on the construction materials of the Roman wall of Lugo, a UNESCO World Heritage site in NW Spain. Results showed that glyphosate and physical treatments triggered changes in clay minerals in the schists, while oxyfluorfen herbicide led to an increase in chloride, nitrate, and sulfate contents of granite. The most recent study revealed a perceptible increase in lightness and a reduction in the yellow component after the application of Thymus zygis Loefl. ex L. essential oil to granite.
